If you've never been to Durango you'll want to plan to stay awhile. Take in Mesa Verde, Silverton, lots to do in the 4-corners area. They have the best pork & green chilli, Navajo fry bread I have ever had. Maybe Michael R., DD, & others can join us. Let's talk about it.

HJ, been to CO but never Durango. Been researching it a bit. I talked to HER the other day that I was thinking about a month long road trip as I haven't really been anywhere since I retired. That could be the start or the end of it.

The San Juan River, not far from Durango, has some of the best fly fishing. Some of the largest trout, caught on the smallest flies, that I have ever caught.

O'Farrell started in 1979. I think Kevin opened up the shop in Santa Fe in 1995 (Canyon Road Hats by Kevin O'Farrell, 725 Canyon Rd). Not sure when it moved down to the Plaza (111 E San Francisco St) -- prior to 2006 anyway.

I've been on the San Juan with a guide from Farmington, NM west & up into UT, then down into AZ on a 4 day float trip.

The Animas River that flows thru Durango holds a lot of kayak races. They usually have gates hanging above the river to show you how to run it. You can rent kayaks from local Outfitters. Not a beer float kind of trip.

They also do a lot of mountain biking around Durango & hold races several times a yr.

Wearing the only green hat I own and if not for HJ pointing it out and encouraging me about it, I probably would not have bought it. The only green I owned so I picked up a Filson western wool shirt to go with it accompanied by a Pendleton pig skin (machine washable) vest and Eddie Kimmel boots.

I'll bring the flies! Chamois leach, Chocolate midge, and of course San Juan worm. Midges in #24-26. My best luck has been with one that I tie, a San Juan worm made from a strip of chamois, on a #22. It looks like the white midge larvae living in the river. Catching 5 lbs trout on a 7x tippet, is fun! I've never done any eastern fly fishing, you could probably teach me a thing or two!

I like that hat! The crease is perfect for it. The boots are beautiful, another exemplary example of boot craftsmanship. The toes really have a nice shape.

You’re on...should i venture that way. Eastern streambeds are much more angular, less rounded rocks=hangups when nymphing (fishing not the other) then Western streambeds. Dry flys, just diff bugs, same tactics.
Now back to hats. Eastern hats...fedora. Western hats...cowboy. Ha
My new Western Eastern fishing hat. Kidding.
