I agree 100%. I own one 100% beaver hat from Jaxonbilt hats and it won't be my last! Great customer service and great quality hats made the way that you want at very reasonable prices.

I've seen the term 7X clear beaver relating to Stetson hats. My understanding is that some 7X hats are clear beaver and some only partially beaver. I received this puppy today. Can anybody tell me whether or not it is beaver?

FMW, I recently added a 1962 and 1971 version of the Miller Stockman catalog hat pages to the Miller Stockman thread. The Stetson 7X was referred to as 'clear beaver' in the 1950s but was simply 'fine beaver' by 1962 (no change in 1971). However, inflation was taking its toll, but the price of a Stetson 100 ($100) and the 7X ($50) stood their ground for maybe two decades - so, Stetson had to be diluting the quality (or losing money, or both). I think you would have to judge by the sweatband - for much of the period when the 7X was supposedly clear beaver, I think the sweatband (and maybe the liner) may have said so - rely more on finding that marker rather than betting on the 7X alone.

fmw - Unless I miss my mark totally, that's just a plain old 7X modern Stetson western. The Xs on that hat don't necessarily mean anything hard and fast as far as beaver content. I've got 5, 6, 7 and 10X hats from what appears to be the same time period, and they are nice, but definitely not pure beaver, nor is yours, judging by the band and the info tag. Still a decent hat, if you got it for a nice price. Cheers, Frank.

My attitude about Ebay buying is not terribly positive. My approach has been to put low bids on hats that are described as pristine for the most part. I rarely win them and really don't care. However, I've gotten a few spectacular bargains from time to time including two brand new Akubras for under $30 each. I didn't do quite as well with this one but not bad. My winning bid was $20 and the shipping was $9.75. It is a Resistol 3X beaver with a 3 1/2" brim. Condition is very close to new - perhaps worn once or twice. The felt is perfect and spotlessly clean. So I add a very wearable Western for under $30. I wonder how it would look with a telescope crown and flat brim.

Your 7 3/8 is too big for me, but this listing was just my size - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110722718876&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Similar to fmw's approach, I won that with no competition, picking it up at the seller's minimum. It needs a change-out in the ribbon treatment for sure, but it should be great quality felt - notice that the liner shows the original Byer-Rolnick crest - most likely pre 1960s, or early 1960s. We are weak in our ability to accurately date Resistols.

Excellent job. That's the way to use Ebay.
