Yep. And Dagwood was cleared. He did, however, know Elizabeth Short, and had been seen with her not long before she died. That's something to wrap one's head around. She hung out with *Dagwood.*

If, as I've read (but so much has been made up, who knows), she was an "aspiring actress / groupie," his appeal could have been that he was a working actor and "touchpoint" to Hollywood. I've seen more tenuous connections work for groupies.

This is a still operating drug store in Greenwich Village - and it still looks like this. I am ashamed that I've never snapped a pic for FL when I've been down there. While this ⇩ is a web shot, I promise to get a "real live" one for us the next time I'm down in the Village. I'll also take some inside shots (if it doesn't seem wrong) as it has - or had the last time I was there - all the real old and cool wood cases and counters that drug stores used to have.

I'd love to see some "real" shots of the place FF. Looks like a very FL kind of joint.

A daytime shot by someone with a much better camera than me:

The strongest scent and sound memory I have from childhood is my grandfather lighting the Prince Albert in his pipe with his Zippo lighter. It is rare these days and I'm not advocating a mass return to smoking, but when I hear that sound and smell burning lighter fluid I always smile.
Bic lighters just don't have that class.

I second that! Sadly my Grandfather smoked Winston's, so not as aromatic as pipe tobacco.

I grew up eating here. Excellent local chain that opened its doors in 1931, in Richmond, VA, and sadly closed its doors in 2012. There were 13 locations. No traces remain at any location, but they all sported this sign. Love it.

Bills served no frills pork or beef bbq sandwiches, without sauce. You added your own, their own recipe, to your liking. Cole slaw on top was an option. They also baked their own pies which were, as a kid, the best pies one could eat. By the slice, or just buy the whole pie and take home. My Dad still says no one does bbq and pies like Bills. I have to agree.

PS: The fact that Taco Bell still exists is a sad statement.

That sucks so much Harv. Springfield (MO) loves a chain restaurant as well. I remember the excitement when Chili's came to town. That love meant that long-time icons like Hamby's Steak House eventually went out (and is now a parking lot). This place had the best blue plate specials and pies. And the rolls ... oh, the rolls. We're starting to see a move towards more local independent restaurants, but it is sad to think of what we lost due to the standardization of America.
