This is a still-operating diner very close to LaGuardia Airport that has excellent burgers (the Texas one with an egg on top is my favorite) and outstanding steak fries (crisp on the outside, fluffy potato on the inside). Well worth stopping in if you fly into LaGuardia as it's right on the way into NYC.

Only posting this because he's a version of "our pizza chef." But while there's a lot going on - which I like, in general, in a neon sign - this sign feels "cheap" or "off" in some way. Why does he have a hotdog in one hand? Sure, I get it, they sell pizza and hotdogs, but my God, he's clearly an old-style Italian chef, the hotdog looks stupid in his hand. And the colors of the neon are jarring - too bright, too day glow.

^^^ I'm not sure our pizza baking friend is neon. He appears to possibly be made from flex LED tubing. That's why the color is wrong. I'm sure it's cheaper and easier to work with, long lasting, blah blah blah. Doesn't mean it's not sacrilege. Philistines.

These are "live" shots from NYC today of an old pharmacy sign I love. It's in an early 1900s building (the yellow brick and fire escape from it can be seen above the sign - a friend used to have an apartment in there and the interior architecture is right out of pre-war / noir movies). Unfortunately, the inside of the pharmacy was "updated" in the '70s (and not since) and looks terrible.

I love it!!

Plumbing has paid most of my bills for the past 30 years or so, and I have to say, this is the first anthropomorphized water heater I've ever seen. Very cool!

Maybe it's just me, but I'm suspicious about the banquet hall.

Lit up, the bikini (and bathing cap - nope, nothing dated here) is fantastic crazy.

Back around 1980 I worked a summer in Branson Missouri. On one road was an old '50s era bill-board advertising a then defunct resort. The sign had degraded and fallen down, but the iconic "diving girl" was a separate part and still in OK shape. To this day I regret not stopping and bringing that girl home...

I can't believe how much those things have gone up in price, and installation cost.

I have replaced several water heaters in my time, but all electric. The one I have now is gas, and that just makes me a bit nervous.

That sign is cool, but I'll bet that place is creepy, and just kept up enough not to be closed down by the county.

Here's one I like much better not lit up. Not lit up, it looks like Sidney and J.J. Hunsecker are about to come out after having agreed to some slimly deal to ruin an innocent person's reputation. Lit up, it loses its noir-ish-ness.
