My father used to say that when he went to Camp Lejeune in 1941 many of the southern guys he served with were issued their first pairs of shoes. I couldn't help thinking of that when I saw this photo.

I have been looking for a cap like Lon Chaney is wearing here in the small photo where there is no snap or sew down to the brim. It can be pulled to the side like in this different view of the same hat.

i think there is a snap there, just further back than normal. you can see a 'pull' in the centre of the underside:
