Always amazes me that a hat was (apparently) considered before shoes.

I think one aspect of that is that shoes wore out a lot more often than hats did.

My dad used to talk about how some of the guys from the South that he served with during WWII had gotten their first pair of shoes in the service. There's proof he wasn't kidding.

Although none of the guys in this pic are close to the camera, I like it a lot because i like pics of working men living their daily routine in flat caps. The driver is wearing a cap, and the two guys at the left of the plc who are looking over the fence, both have caps on. On my computer I zoomed in quite a bit and there is actually a little boy looking over the fence, standing between the two taller guys, and he is wearing a cap as well:
