As much as I can't stand NPR, I used to listen to the two local NPR stations KPCC and KCRW back in the 1980s and early 1990s because Ian Whitcomb and Joe Monte used to have their shows on those stations playing music from the 1920s and '30s. When they went off the air I went through withdrawal for several years with only the stuff I had taped off the radio to keep me sane. That was in the pre YouTube days.

To me, Green Day is to punk what Def Leppard is to metal.

Anyway, we still have 4 stations of national, public service radio and every Friday evening they have a show called Da Capo with 20s-60s music and a really knowledgeable host who really knows his topic. I always listen to the web version on Saturday mornings when I clean my flat. Otherwise, I'm ashamed to say I don't really listen to radio. Whenever I do (and I am talking about the public service version now) I ask myself why I don't because they have some really great programs, much better than anything our public service tv churns out (not that I ever watch tv either; it's probably over a month since I last turned on the tv).

When I was in high school and Def Leppard released their first album, they were metal. There were very few of us listening to them or metal where I lived, but by the standards of that time they were metal. By their third album it was all downhill for us fans of metal and we had found harder metal music that was more metal.

Green Day are an awesome band. As were Def Lepp. But I do tire of Green Day being labeled as "sell outs" or otherwise not worthy of being considered "legit". They were IMHO, a very intelligent extension of that movement. Still edgy, but thought-provoking. I am not in alignment with their lyrics as they relate to politics, but I can appreciate them and enjoy them. Dookie and American Idiot are amazing recordings from start to finish. I'll defend that to any Hipster, of any age!

Green Day is good, but I kinda lost interest after Dookie. They started to get too political and I'm allergic to most political bands. I moved on. I don't like most of their new stuff. I feel the same about Weezer -- "Beverly Hills" really makes me CRINGE!!! But that blue album -- listening perfection! I could care less really about what is "punk" or "metal" or even "swing." If a tune is good I'm not too good to blare it lol I love Def Lepp, too. I would say Pyromania is indeed "metal." I love all kinds of music from all eras and I have freed my musical inhibitions! lol Much to my husband's chagrin.....

Variety is the spice of life. There is so much good music out there and it is so much easier to find nowadays.

I HATE politics when it invades my entertainment. But I just had to shut it off for that album. It's too good, musically.That goes for musicians, actors, whoever. As someone said so well long ago, just ST*U and sing! lol

Agreed. The Blue Album was released the year my son was born. What a record! It's a shame they lost it after Maladriot.
