Thoughts on my Aero Stockman order? (And please post pics of your longer Aeros)

Would love your thoughts on my prospective Stockman order. I want a warm, trim-fitting winter jacket (so am ordering now). I am 183cm/84 kilos.

- Black size 38 Stockman in FQHH
- One inch extra on the sleeves
- Green OD stitching [I think this is what will give the jacket its distinction; I was a bit worried about black being boring]
- Cheyenne-style outer pockets [or should I stick with the Stockman style? Help me out here] with corduroy lining and slightly scalloped flaps
- Two-piece back
- Alpaca lining on body with layer of olive gabardine (b10) cloth on top of that [thanks Jan!]; olive gabardine lining only on sleeves
- Storm cuffs
- Inner pocket in left facing with snap closure

Was also thinking about a detachable black mouton collar but worried that could make me look like something out of Cabaret.

Do post pics of your longer Aeros here if you have the time. Would be great to be able to make a comparison.

Scalloped pocket flaps like on the Mariner look great. Patch pockets look even greater but they are not very practical if they should serve as handwarmer pockets. They lack a proper pocket bag.

The detachable mouton collar is a great idea and it doesn't look camp at all. If you don't like it give it to the cat (if you have one). Cats love sheepskin!

Seconded on the mouton. I have Aero's mouton on my AN6552 (well, duh), and I love it. I plan eventually, when funds allow, to buy a black Halfbelt, and I intend to get the detachable collar with that. I love it on the AN6552 on cool, dry days, not so much if it is warm (feels icky if it gets sweaty) or drizzly. Given how unlikely it is I'll ever be able to justify two otherwise identical halfbelts, the detachable collar is the next best thing! I also plan to get it on a Barnstormer one day, for that real Von Richthoffen look.

I really like the idea of the OD thread with the black leather. I love how it looks against the seal of my Aero A2 (goat); the contrast will look even better with black, I should think. Look forward to seeing photos: I might well do this with my black halfbelt when the funds allow....

Nice idea, Jan - I was going to PM you for your thoughts. Who would you suggest to make the jacket? Do you think such a request bothers Aero?

And I really wish I did have a cat (I want a Tonkinese) but I go away too often.

I think you have good ideas here.

My two cents:

If you want a trim fitting Stockman, order one size smaller than your suit jacket size. This was Will's advice for a Barnstormer: I assume the advice would also hold for your jacket.

If you want a warmer jacket, put alpaca under the gabardine in the sleeves.

Also, Aero offers alpaca in different colors and thicknesses. They offer some very warm alpaca (which is not standard), if that is what you are looking for. You may request samples.

Thanks, Philalethes. I asked Aero about thicker alpaca but Amanda replied with the double layer option, instead. Hm, yes, thought about the arms but not sure if that wouldn't be too hot for the British climate, where I'd be wearing it most of the time. Sir J

Depends when you want to wear it, really... My Bootlegger and Halfbelt get worn mostly between September - November and February-April. The Halfbelt, with gaberdine lining, is wearable in slightly higher temperatures than the Bootlegger (tartan wool lining, and more horse around my body due to the design). With Alpaca, I think they Bootlegger especially would be a Winter affair. Also, if you're going for a trim fit, it's especially important not to get too warm a lining, IMO, otherwise you risk having a jacket that's only wearable for a very short period of the year when it gets cold enough to wear it but not so cold that you'd want to layer underneath. Once the Winter really starts to bite, I'm right into the Irvin / B3 / B15...

I'd also add a throat-latch to the removable collar, it's nice to flip it up when it gets cold, and this also keeps it from getting wet to an extent... I don't know if this would make the whole collar construction too bulky.

Good idea. I like it as a detail in and of itself.... I had one fitted to my (non-mouton) Bootlegger, just because I like how it looked. Never actually used it.

Great style...wish I had one
