Hats similar to that can be found in feed and seed stores for about that price. The popularity and demand for them has dwindled, but I still see them from time to time. My mother in law still wears one when she gardens. RBH has commented about these before if I remember correctly.

WHAAAAAAHHH!!

I have this picture of a retiree in a Aloha shirt, plaid shorts, wrap-a-round shades, black socks and sandals on a bench in Boca Raton or Miami..

I've seen new big brim straws at WalMart with the green plastic shade material (for gardening??)

I remember hats like this as a child...something from a different time and era.

Nice Hat!

That is a very interesting hat!
I have a hat in the same style, without the visor, that I bought from the Amish in Indiana about twenty years ago. It is the every day hat of that community.
I was told by an old Indiana farmer that non Amish farmers also wore straw fedora style hats before WWII . After the war, seed companys started giving away the "Seed Caps" that you see farmers wear today, for free. He told me he thought that the straw hats were more pratical.
They keep sun and rain off you.
But the seed caps were free and the seed companys gave away alot of them.

Nice hat.

Really? THe bash and the band seem a little dressy for the Amish. Most of them wear flatter (or simpler) crowns, and very simple black bands.

As for this visor hat, I've never really understood visors - the sun still gets through, but its just green? What's the point? lol

Personally, I'd prefer to just have the brim at the front.

Well, it wouldn't be my choice personally, but definitely interesting. I don't recall ever seeing anything like this before. I can certainly imagine someone wearing the like of that, though - I picture the natural wearer as a gentleman in his mid 50s - retirement age, wearing it in the Summer while out and about driving in an early 50s Ford, Caddy or similar. It puts me in mind of the sort of fifties period accessories for cars, like the sun visor above the windscreen (windshield?).

How many Amish do you really know?

Most folks only think of the Pennsylvania Old Order Amish from the Lancaster area when they think of the Amish . . . But there are groups in Southern Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky that are far more "modern" :) . . . I have seen them in hats like this (without the visor of course) . . .

And I have a traditional Old-Order Style Amish Hat, which I got a few years back . . . Flat-top, plain band . . . which was hand made by an Amish Hat-maker in Indiana . . . Looks kind of neat . . . But it is heavy and hot as all get out. If I were Amish, I would certainly go for something more comfortable when in the fields.

Tractor Supply Company sells one very similar. I have seen them in the one here in town.

The concept dates back as early as 1929, but that was for a felt fedora with the transparent green visor shade. Can't imagine too many were made or sold.

Remember this quote when YOU are in your mid-50's. :D

lol I should have been clearer, I wasn't saying this is an "old man's hat" or something intended to be negative... Bear in mind most of my experience with fifties styles growing up was the vestiges of fifties style clothing worn by my grandparents, and such cars I have only ever encountered as hobbyist cars (Dad's a big vintage / classics buff) - most of the folks in those circles were people who got interested in older cars partly out of nostalgia for what they remembered from their childhood and whatever. Until this last couple of years, the only folks I'd ever seen in vintage looks were people who would have been around in that era and therefore around that sort of age. No ageist comment intended, apologies if any taken! 55 is an awful lot closer for me than 25 ever will be again!

No offense whatsoever was taken. I was just trying to be funny. In the past couple of years I've finally started to feel like a "responsible adult" (the key word is "starting to"). It just struck me as kind of funny that a hat like that was described as sort of an older man's hat. This is an observation that I would have made a few years back, but now I've become that "older man".

lol When I saw this hat I envisioned an almost Monty-Python-esque scene with a crowd of people walking around town and crashing into things because their brims are turned all the way down to their noses. If that's how you wear your hat, then a green visor is a very good idea ;)

lol I know what you mean.... I was never opposed to wearing a suit when required that I remember, but the idea that I would one day choose to dress like that when I had the option of going casual I'm sure was something i thought I'd never "age" into.... I'm sure if i think about it there's lots of "old man" things I do now that were once anathema. I'd love to go back in time and pay my 18 year old self a visit, just to see how horrified we actually are by each other. :D

I seem to remember a lot of old geezers on Chautauqua Lake wearing hats like these while fishing. That to me represents sitting in a row boat for hours with a fishing rod.
