Sharp lookin' lid, R. -- it is quite distinctive! I really like that particular width of ribbon -- very nice. Congrats!!! :eusa_clap

BTW, what is a "dress western" weight?

Cheers,
JtL

Mike will have to answer this but from what little I know it is what has to do with most western hats being thicker than most fedora styled hats.
Hope this helps and I hope Mike or one of our other hatters can chime in.

That'll be a beauty and a toughie for a long time to come. Can't help but to want to see it get just a little 'broken in' y'know, but because it's not the kind of thing one wears when fly fishing, and due to its weight, that will take a while indeed.

What RBH was really trying to inform us was, this black hat is a western weight staple body blank. Meaning it is a few oz. heavier than the dress body hat blanks, alot of people seem to want to say all western hats are real thick, when you have those with alot of wool and rabbit in them , or what I call the truck stop hat, they are thick, but the blanks I, Art and others get are not in that class, but they are thicker than the dress hat blanks.

The black hat I made RBH, was a hat, I felt if he knew he was going to be out in some weather and he did not want one of his nicer hats to have to be in, then he had a decent looking hat that he could throw on and out the door he goes and enjoy what ever he was wanting to do.

I have made myself several western hats out of the same blank , and wear them all the time, matter of fact the gray hat I had on when RBH meet, was a staple body western, I'll let RBH tell you if that hat was heavy and thick, I handed it to him and told him it was one of the first hats I made, he could not get over how lite the hat was due to the large size, has a 4 1/2" brim, and a 5 1/4" open crown, before I did a low crown cattleman's crease in the hat. have worn it horse back, rain, hot sun, dusty wind storms and everyday life, just clean it off about every month and steam it when it needs a little and wear it again.

I have had some people at my gun club send me hats to have things done to them, from replacement ribbons and change the crease to new sweatbands that were the wool/rabbit hats, mostly wool I think, that I had a hard time, doing anything to them, sewing a sweatband in by hand is like driving nails without a hammer and just using your fist, it is hard.

Sorry to go on so long.

Mike
