Thank you, sir.
The crown is a bit dirty and that little scuffing you can see in the pic of the "Open Road" imprint above is really the only problems with this one out of the box.

He: That is a fine OR. I have been enjoying wearing that model. The proportions of the OR are instantly recognizable. IMO, the gray is very classy looking.

Interesting tidbits of hat history included with the hat!

Wear the OR proudly, Eric-

Me too. Except that we rarely see any other than silverbelly mostly and sometimes the tan ones. I'd like a black one, myself.
Odd that I don't yet have a vintage style in Silverbelly. I have one in gray, and was lucky enough snag one in green. (please forgive the rather ragged look in the second pic, it was taken well into a 1400 mile/20 hour road trip)

As soon as I get my Amon Carter Open Road back from a buddy who is getting rid of the LBJ Cattleman Crease for me I'll post up some pictures. It is one Unworn, Brand New in the Original Box Beautiful Hat that I fell into on Ebay last week. Apparently no one shopping recognized it for what it was except for a couple of people here on the lounge. It's a 7 5/8 LO with the initials W.H.T. custom printed in the leather hat band. I'd love to trace it's history but I'm afraid it's impossible to figure out who all Amon Carter gave his hats out to. William Howard Taft would be a great idea except that the hat doesn't look that old. We figured it's probably a 60's version. Here are a few pictures from the Ebay Auction. The hat is as good or better than the pictures. I'll post the updated "Stratolized" pictures as soon as I get it back.

I guess I should have asked first, but do you guys mind if I join you here in the Open Road Guild? This is my second OR and my first one is a 50 year old hat that I purchased from Brando (Lorry) here on the forum and wear almost everyday!

P.S. you can see the initials stamped in the hatband in that last picture.

Well, this was not a hat given out by Amon Carter, who died in 1955. Based on the liner, it appears to be a hat that is associated with his son -- Amon Carter, Jr. You are probably right in thinking that this is a 60's hat -- it would be nice to see any other logos imprinted on the sweat just to add them to the mix for dating purposes. All that being said, it is still a unique Stetson, to be sure.

Cheers,

Date of Manufacture: 1940s, I say this because it has the stars on the logo on the sweatband and the liner both.

First off, congrats on a very nice Open Road. Great color and condition, and an early 3X OR is going to have some darn nice felt! Well done.

Just one word on dating. The characteristics of your OR are also consistent with early 50's. I would date it to circa 1950, which gives a couple of years in either direction as possibilities.

Cheers,
JtL

Here's the one I recently acquired:

Stetson Open Road 3x by mattface, on Flickr

Anyone got an educated guess on vintage? The liner has the plastic shield and is glued in. Not sure when they stopped putting trolleys in these, but I'm pretty sure this one is original. THere are no size or reorder tags under the band, and the size tag has green lettering and a union label on the back side.

For those who own a modern Stetson Open Road (made within the last five to ten years), have you worn it in the rain? I haven't worn my new one yet (the last one I had ended up a disaster in the felt), and I was wondering how it would hold.

I just acquired an Open Road by chance a friend got it on e-bay for $15 thinking it was a 6 7/8. Unfortunately for him, not me :D, it was actually a 7 1/8 or maybe a 7 LO which fits me perfectly!!!!!!!! It was terribly dirty and after a good cleaning, lots of shaping to remove the center crease it's a great hat! I have a late 60's Deluxe in Open Road style silverbelly but from the liner on this hat I am sure it is late 50's however someone has changed the sweat out and it has no markings indicating it's a true "Open Road". Any way to tell other then if it's stamped?? I have read that the felt was of higher quality then the standard Deluxe but its hard to tell since the felting is considerably different between my pre 60's hats and more modern hats. Also, what color was this hat called from the factory... I put a photo next to my silverbelly for reference. Any idea on what an original box should look like?? Thanks for the help!!!

Just picked up a Stetson Roadster 6x in straw. If you don't know this hat, it is an OR style hat from five or so years ago with three diamond vents on the sides. It came with a leather hat band that has been replaced with a OR style bow in black. Even though it is Shantung, the brim is not stiff at all and there is no wire in the brim's edge...just folded over and sewn. If I knew how to post pictures, I would...

A creamy sunset silver belly OR royal deluxe acquired an hour ago (bottom hat):

The one on top, purchased simultaneously, is a Resistol silver belly OR clone with a shorter brim.
