Bigger Don

Practically Family
Yeah, Don. Around these parts, there are no obscure references to WKRP.
Few people know that the story of WKRP is similar to the real story of a real Cincinnati radio station, WEBN. WEBN was family owned and switched from mainly classical to mainly album oriented rock. They did have some outrageous stunts, like "Loud Night", when they invited fans to make as much noise as possible (e.g. encouraging chain saws against automobiles) when their softball team (The Neutron Loungers) would play, but no turkey drops.

That's about the end of the similarities I can speculate about, except maybe the outrage from classical fans. Frank Woods Sr continued to host classical Sunday mornings into the 80s. Robin Wood, his daughter, was long-time morning DJ/host. Frank Woods Jr became a big wig with Clear Channel when Clear Channel bought WEBN.

The other link to "real" Cincinnati is the choice of call letters. WKRC are the call letters for both a TV and radio station in Cincinnati.

An interesting collection of hats on the Oregon State Extension Agents from 1930. The white canes are a stock judging thing, and the agents got them as a symbol of their jobs.
