The nicest comment I ever heard

Whilst my wife was talking to banker who would advise her what to do with her pension savings...I waited outside in the street. Whilst looking at a real estate agent's "houses for sale" adverts, a lady older than me rollered past, and as I greeted her by tipping the edge of my Montecristi, she simply said "nice hat"; for which I thanked her. It needs to be said that, here in Belgium, people are very reserved, and her comment truly pleased me. Wow!

Haha! Another Belgian!
Yes that is a very nice comment for sure.
It's sometimes funny how they are looking at my hats and smiling, but don't dare to say anything...

I was wearing my tan Stratoliner while running some errands yesterday afternoon. While stopping to exchange some headlight replacement bulbs (aside: why do they make both straight and 90* angle bulbs, but sell them under the same part number???), the guy behind the desk admired my hat. he had to check the stock and sadly told me that they didn't have the straight-wired bulbs that I needed, then paused and started keying an entry on the computer. Next thing I knew, he was handing me a set of the next better make of bulbs and told me it wasn't my fault that they didn't have the replacement, then commented something along the lines of wanting to keep the better-dressed clientele coming back. I basically got a $15 - $20 upgrade just because the guy liked the hat!

Making a mental note to wear my nicer hats in there any time I need to buy or exchange anything.

Ho ho ho, Antwerpen! I worked most of my life there, the ships (from the office, though), never regretted it.
Great to have Belgians who like hats: a rare breed, in fact. Greetings from Zaventem (yes, I live there).

The other night while walking my greyhounds I rounded a corner and a young lady stopped in her tracks and looked at me with a puzzled look on her face. I had just returned from a wedding reception which followed an outdoor wedding and was wearing a white linen suit with a Panama hat - not a common sight in the Canadian North.

"Is this real life?" she asked me.
"No. You're lucid dreaming", I said jokingly.

She proceeded to complement me on my dogs and my attire and I on hers. She was wearing a pretty floral dress. We went on our separate ways but encountered each other again later.

"I gotta know," she said. "What is all this?" indicating my get-up.
"I was at an outdoor wedding."
"I thought I was in Havana for a second. You don't see many people dressing like that around here. You made my month! I even had to text my friend". She was off again into the night and I felt good for the rest of the walk.

Today I was visiting with my brother, who owns a retail store selling tourist-y tee shirts and hoodies. I was wearing one of my own creations, undyed beaver with a greyish green ribbon. Three ladies that looked mid to late 60's came in and started looking around when one spotted me and my hat sitting behind the counter. She told me all about how her father wore hats just like it, then called her friends over and began exclaiming to them how nice it looked (they agreed). One asked me where I got such a nice hat and I quite proudly explained that I made it myself with home-made tools. They were impressed, and asked if I were a professional hatter. Not yet, I replied, but I do have aspirations.
I have never received any negative comments on any hats I wear, fairly often hear a quick "nice hat" in passing, but every once in a while I get glowing commendations from passers-by like this. Almost always, it's when I'm wearing one of my originals.
Makes a guy feel good.:)

I received my first comment ever this weekend. We'd finished working some cows and I stopped at a store on my way home. It had been muddy, so despite knocking the worst of it off my boots and jeans had a layer of muck about halfway up to my knees, and there were spots of mud and dried "cow exhaust" in some other places. I was standing in line waiting to be called up to the counter when a gentleman passing in front of me stopped and said "I like your hat." [emoji1]

Not sure if the hat really looked that nice, or if it was just nice by comparison because the rest of me didn't look so hot but either way I'll take it. [emoji106]

A couple of weeks ago my wife and I visited a good friend who is residing in a health care facility because he has suffered a number of strokes in recent years and can no longer live on his own. The main entryway of this facility is a large "common room" where residents can gather to talk, watch television, play cards, or whatever. As we approached the main hallway on the opposite side of this common room an older gent in a wheelchair looked at me, smiled, pointed to my head, and said with a wink, "I want your hat," as we passed. :)

It's probably my demeanour, I was asked by the older guy, who collects the trolleys/carts in our supermarket, if I work nights. "I wish," I said, "No, I'm retired," "Retired!" He retorted, looking quite surprised, "How old are you?" I should have told where to go, but I know he's a widower, in his late seventies, and probably enjoys both the extra income and the company. "I'm seventy," I said, smiling as he stood there, as I walked by. "You're too young to be seventy," he called out. "I'll take that as a compliment, from a youngster who knows," I called back. His face lit up. Made my day.

Great stuff everyone! I remember walking around the casino last year after a formal Christmas party. A woman walking by turns to her boyfriend/husband? and says "wow, look at that man, he's dressed great". (Faun colored Stylemaster and black overcoat over a navy suit). He replied "yeah!" Then called "great hat!" It was uplifting and a little surreal, felt like a character in someone's movie.

Last Friday night, in the only saloon I frequent, I sat next to a fellow at the bar who was having a meal. I was wearing my vintage chocolate Whippet. He was alone and as I sat down we did the perfunctory nod and hello. Neither one of us was much interested in conversation beyond that, so he finished his meal as I sat and enjoyed my drink and people watched, as I'm prone to do. He ordered an after dinner drink and payed his tab when he finished. He stood up to leave and took a step or two towards the door, turned around, walked up to me and said "that's a really nice hat." He turned and left as I said thanks. Made my night.

It's the difference between looking good and looking great, as they say, Jeff! I hope that wasn't the last time you wore a hat, and WELCOME to the Lounge.

Gotta love it, Greg! Thanks for sharing that one.

I walked in a bakery this morning where I never go wearing my Sahara Longmire hat (see my alias picture), and the baker started to sing the "Dallas" TV show music and said to his colleague "Hey here is JR. How are things in Dallas. Now that was a great show" ;)

My other baker calls me "Lucky" for the French Lucky Luke cartoon character, known as "the man who shoots faster than his own shadow" ;)

Haha ... JR and Lucky Luke is what you would expect as "frame of association" in a European city :D

Btw, I love your politically very incorrect "selfie" - must be from your youth. Mr. Luke quit the cigarettes back in 1988, and he's been chewing a straw ever since. I've even seen a clip where he wore a nicotine patch! ;)
