I seem to remember reading something a long time ago about the studio puposely putting Dan Duryea in movies where he slapped women around because he got loads of fanmail from women when he did this in movies. Apparently women loved it.

Eddie Muller's excellent book Dark City: The Lost World of Film Noir mentions that. I guess some women do like the "Bad Boy"! Yeesh.
