For my 1,000th post I'd like to show you my newest hat made for me by Mr.Art Fawcett,jr.
It's based on a hat that was worn by the French director Jean-Luc Goddard while filming "Le Mepris" with Brigitte Bardot and Jack Palance (1963). I sent some pictures to Art (not very good ones-sorry Art!)from a documentary on the DVD. Despite the lousy pictures (see below) Art was able to capture the hat and I couldn't be more pleased!

Judging by the dimensions of the hat from the source photos it seems likely that the original hat was made in the late 50s. Maybe in the '57-'59 period.

Here are the particulars:It's done in a charcoal color with a black ribbon. The brim is 1 3/4". The crown in front is 4 1/2",back is 3 3/4". Ribbon is about 2".

Outstanding! Another beautiful hat (like your 30's Art model)! Damn, are you really a 7 7/8's? And I thought I had a big noggin!

Wear it well!
Actually I'm a 7 3/4" extra long oval. I thought originally that I was 7 7/8ths because of the E.L.Oval business. Once I delt with a professional hatter-Art-I learned my correct size.

Thanks for the compliment. I really like this new hat, but I still enjoy wearing the 30s style one too. I don't know what will be next. For now I'm quite content with the two that I have. :)

What a cool hat - I normally don't like smaller brims, but that one really works (and fits you well).

I also feel the sizing pain - my Akubras are 7 7/8.

That's a great hat. Something quite different from what we so often see on these boards. A tribute to a one of a kind film maker too.

This hat suits you very well! Art has done it again. Perhaps it's the fact that you are reading "Naked Lunch" in one of the pictures, but you remind me of a young William Burroughs.

Actually,I don't think Burroughs was ever young..;) Thanks for the compliment though!

Haha, that's true; I have yet to see him as a young man. The only photos I've seen are of him staring magisterially out from behind those spectacles of his.

Wow - that is a wonderful hat. I really like the colour. Is that the "steel" colour felt that Art has?

I have a '50s (I think) Royal Stetson that has the same colour and ribbon, the brim is just a wee bit wider.

It looks good on you. :eusa_clap

Edit: Duhh... the first post said it was charcoal. I need to pay more attention!
