The dreaded inside pocket question

I'm still not udnerstanding why an extra piece of leather is used for the inside jacket..

I took a picture of the inside pocket of a cheap wilsons leather jacket I have, and it doesn't seem to have that, and has no problem with the pocket showing through.

Is it not possible to get an inside jacket made along the same lines?

That can be done, but I think it's seen by many as simply not as nice looking and just cheaper looking.

Also, there's a danger than the lining might sag below the hem if it's dragged down with anything heavy inside, particularly if there's no strip at the hem.

Aero used to offer both types of pocket, but since Ken took over the regins again they seem to have dropped the style above. I always avoided them myself for the simple reason that they can sag, which the 'pistol pocket' in the facing will not do. Also, should I ever require one of my jacket to be relined, it's a simpler job with no pockets in the lining, and the ones in the facing will remain where they are. In other jackets I've had, some of the lining-based inner pockets have sagged quite significantly with use, hence why I avoided that style on my Aeros.

(FWIW.... I've been casting my eye just this week over the Aeros of mine that have these inside pockets, and I'm not seeing any mark at all where they are. The same square blocks that Griff's Cafe Racer has are apparent round the twin breast pockets on my 30s Halfbelt, yes, but not where the inner pockets are. Doesn't bother me, but then 'over-engineering' is something I quite like.)

Also, most inside pockets are of a G-1 type - a vertical slit cut into the leather edging on the inside that closes with a zip or stud-press - though I noticed Schitzo had a looped-button closure on the same jacket that he had the shirt-pocket construction - both were attempts to avoid the pocket shape issue.
The only reason I have the problem is that I was wearing my jacket during a bit of a bump with my car, and the friction from the seatbelt brought it through. It's not a major issue though, just adds character, and better that than friction burns and bruising. [huh]

I noticed a little bit of this problem on my vintage Hercules (around the chest pocket). It's not nearly as noticeable as on Griff's because the horsehide isn't as heavy or smooth, and the inside facing is much smaller....
I have noticed that the inside facing along the zipper has caused a wrinkle on the outside of the jacket over the years..

Those lining pockets were awful -- you had to virtually take the jacket off to get at them.

It's another reason I prefer the G1 types - easier got at in a neat fitting jacket without fully unzipping.

Not sure I'd regard it as a "problem" given that it doesn't impede functionality or damage the jacket, but beyond that it's certainly a matter of personal cosmetic preference. It dosn't bother me (weirdly, I suppose I quite like it), but I can see it might be off putting for others. Funny thing is I don't remember it ever really being raised at all in the past. [huh] Maybe we're all just too picky? ;) lol

I have to relive this old thread. I am a little concerned regarding my inside pockets. When ordering my jacket I was advised to definitely go with two inside pockets as I wanted the jacket without chest pockets. I asked whether it will be a problem in terms of shining through and was told it isn’t. However, my feeling is that they will. Yes FQHH is thick but the leather around the pockets on the inside too. Does anyone have pictures how this will look? On the one hand I don’t want to miss them as I carry everything like a wallet there, but having strong wear at only one point would also look weird. Could also be part of the patina...hope to get some opinions from the experts;)

Do you have snaps on the pockets? These will definitely show through. Most of the veterans here gop for inside pockets without snap buttons because of that.

Yes I have, could you remove them afterwards? My feeling is that it is more the inner leather „frame“ that looks through.

I like to think the vertical inside pocket inside the leather facing without closure was my original idea, but who knows? I did order one vertical inside pocket for my CXL FQHH Teamster a few years ago but was sweet talked out of doing it for my two Sheenes, Maxwell, and Mulligan by both Holly and Ken.

After 5-6 years of wear with my Teamster, nothing is showing through at the time and doubt that it would bother me all that much even if it did. So ... if I had it to do over again, I would likely order one vertical inside pocket on the left side (I am right handed) on all of my jackets, primarily for my iPhone which I think is actually hardwired to my brain! However, I would probably not stuff my pocket with stuff, especially heavy stuff.

The other thing I would have done differently would have been no zippered closure of the handwarmer pockets on my russet Vicenza Sheene as the zips abrade the $@%# out of the backs of my hands when used. My black Vicenza Sheene has no closure of the handwarmer pockets that works much better for me than with zips.

I think if you carry something square like cigarette pack or thick object and as you stand against something like bar counter, or when you cross your arm across the chest, etc. or if the jacket fit tight and worn zipped up for a long time where the leather become humid from perspiration and dry again, then it might mold over the object, the frame of the pocket itself I doubt it would show, maybe unless you wear the jacket soaking wet and it dries on you then it might happen probably.

In goatskin, the pockets will be immediately noticeable as a 'frame', but it depends on how much this bothers you. In my FQHH jacket, they showed through in about a year, and the poppers showed through faster. I had subsequent jackets made without them- my Stockman does not have them, and it has kept its general appearance. I'd opt for gun pockets made extra deep (about the width and length of an average paperback) without poppers. I like the space to carry travel docs, iPad, novel, keys, uzi, etc.
