I sold that hat on eBay for $450…moth bites and all. I was and wasn’t surprised at the sale price. I liked the hat so much I immediately contacted a hatter and looked into duplicating it. He has the felt, but we are still looking for the right ribbon.

Like you I’m surprised yet not surprised at the sale price. Beautiful felt and ribbon color….and I ain’t askarid of some moth bites. I’ve got a Stevens Pace Setter full of moth bites, sweat barely hanging on but a favorite I’ll hang on to till the bitter end.

7 3/8 Dobbs. Perhaps my favorite colors to date. A great blue felt and a lightly contrasting lilac ribbon. The 2 ¾” wide brim has biding that is wider on the top than the bottom so perhaps a camber style hat, but it also works great as a snap brim. Sadly, there is moth damage. It’s in the freezer for the next few days, but it needs a home so send me a PM if you’re interested.

The color is black. This Dobbs wasn't really a find. A hat seller texted me that he had found it among his mountain of hats and we settled on a price.

Dobbs Westward. The liner is what drew me to it and it was noticed by Max @drmaxtejeda too. 5 ½” open crown and a 3” wide brim. The felt is very soft, very moldable, and very mellow. It’s definitely a dress felt and not western. The sweatband is soft and supple.

Nice score. I had that on my watchlist for about an hour before you got lt. I was tempted, but I decided it was too nice to feed to my moths. They wouldn't really appreciate it.
If memory serves, the plain debossment puts it before 1950. Way cool.

I think it’s a 40s liner crest. If you look at the hatted professor site, he says it is a crest borrowed from the 40s with an oilskin cover. What looks like the caption for the image saying it is a 60s crest is either referring to the use of a 40s crest in the 60s or it is the sub-headline for the next paragraph improperly spaced under the pic.

Thanks, Dan. I knew there was no way it’s a 1960s hat. The felt is quite nice and compares well to the Stetson Royal DeLuxe felt of the same era. The debossing also matches up with our estimates of 1940s. Thanks for the help!

I am not surprised to see that manufacturers tag. Sure they re-used liner tip designs over the years… but a lot about this hat including the sweat stitching was giving me 40s vibes. Nice find, Brent!

Thanks, Joe. It lasted about 2 hours on eBay. I’m turning this too small for me Dobbs into a custom Gannon.

Greetings new member here. I have been lurking for some time but this is my first post. I have purchased about a dozen hats over the past several months and have some Dobbs hats I really like. I have read the Hatted Professors articles on dating Dobbs hats but I wondered if it is possible to get approximate dates for Dobbs hat boxes. This photo shows two of my Dobbs hat boxes and the box on the left appears to be an older style box than the one on the right. Both contain very nice Dobbs Twenty Fedoras.

So as soon as I saw Brent post this Dobbs Westward here on the Lounge, I went to eBay to see if he had it for sale. This is a really fabulous hat!
