The Dobbs Diner...

This Dobbs boater features a sewn braid construction of soft straw. It is very flexible, with the brim shape held by the use of an unusual rolled edge. I've not seen another like it. It can be dated quite reliably to the 1920s from the Dobbs store location ephemera collected by Brad Bowers. I selected this hat to wear to my daughter's wedding three years ago - perhaps not the perfect choice but it is very comfortable and I was encouraged by knowing that no one would be looking at me.

Fantastic Dobbs Boater, Alan. I think your choice of that one for your daughters special day just underlines so well the beauty of the bride and your love for her. Gorgeous photos both then and now.

Hey folks!
I've been out of the hat buying game for a bit, but when this one popped up for cheap on Etsy in the wee hours when my resistance was low I just couldn't help myself. The seller's pics looked nice.

4 dollar shipping got it to me stuck sideways into a tall narrow box. Arrived with the brim wonky and a good amount of mothing I couldn't see in the seller's pics.

The standard crest with the plastic cover had me thinking 60's, but the tag xays different.

According to the Professor's site, the standard crest was used in the late 40's, then again in the 60's, but not the 50's. Judging by the dimensions and quality of the felt, plus the crisp gold debossment and brown sweatband I'm guesing right around 1950. Give or take a year.
Here's an unusual tag attatched inside the sweat.

And the debossment.

After some quality time on the Homburg flange, and a bit of sandpaper, brushwork and steam the brim is back to it's original shape and the mothing is a bit less noticeable.

Despite my best efforts to put in a more refined crease, it just wanted to be a bit lumpy so I put in this more casyal crease and just let it be as lumpy as it wants. It has a few stains on the binding and a small tear on the sweat, but that's just character.
2 1/2" brim front to back, 2 1/4" on the sides. 135g.

Head shot.

Not like I needed another grey Homburg, but I didn't have one with this color binding...
Always an excuse to be found if you look!

Good get, John. Those are some of my favorite colors. I'll bet that tag is a cleaner's tag or maybe even a second-hand sales tag.

Thanks Jim!
I think you're right about the tag, as a closer inspection found it to be held on by little staples. And I fear the sweat may be suffering from dry rot, as the gentle removal of the staples caused some of the finish to flake off. Oh well, for twenty bucks plus four to ship it was worth it just to check it out and maybe get a wear or two out of it. :)

Very nice, John. I like the light grey colour and it's always good to have a grab and go hat (or twenty).

Nice catch, John. Who wouldn't want that Dobbs in their collection? Looks good on you, too.

A tweed (I think) Trilby with a Herringbone pattern that I fished out of the 'Bay. Fits like a glove, and is surprisingly comfortable considering today's 90°F temperatures. Yeah, the crown is a little rumpled but I don't really care. Here's the liner logo...

2rz6C72.jpg

...and the only labels on the hat:

Rs8uEjY.jpg

The inset in that photo is, obviously, the Union logo. And I tried to re-create the only info I could find on the hat that might hint at it's age, but without a Dobbs decoder ring it's pretty much useless.

This isn't the type of hat that I imagined would be my first Dobbs, but...well, that's life. And I shall own at least one of their fur felt fedoras one of these days; this will do for now.
