The Dobbs Diner...

Currently watching a late 40's Dobbs Game Bird, on eBay. I've seen posts about this on the Lounge--Can anyone vouch for the quality of the Game Bird hats of this era? I have heard good things about Dobbs hats generally.
I think I saw that one. I question the claim of 1940s. It does not have the lines of an early gamebird. Never trust a seller's claims to age. It is however a nice Game Bird, just don't break the bank for it.

I used the FL Dobbs dating thread. The details pointed to the hat being late 40s. The text on the sweatband is a sign, but maybe it extends to early 50s.

Youre talking about a listing for a chocolate brown Dobbs, yes?

The listing I was watching was for the 7 1/4 size in darker brown, which is definitely newer, kind of a turd for the money. The size 7 listed for $10 by seller Steveschurman is a lot older. Maybe not quite a 40s example, it is hard to tell from his images. His auctions have been very good, they all seem to be size 7, personal collection? The sweat is wider and the liner embroidered (probably). One fine Bird for sure. I think it will go for some major bucks, I know of a couple of Loungers who are interested.

I was referring to Steveschurman's listing (I'd say my cover was blown, but if other Loungers are interested, I don't stand a chance). The hat appeared late 40's to me, so I believed the description, but if someone can refute that, I'd rather not bid.

I don't know for sure who this Steve seller is, but his listings are spot on, good (although a little slim) descriptions and a fair starting price. The cream rises to the top and his good ones go for proper money. Stefan from the Netherlands follows this seller, as do I (For trading fodder with Stefan), but all is fair in love and hat auctions. The key is not to be an Ebay newbie and start bidding too early, wait til the auction is finally shaking out and then jump in. I think the dating is OK, but Dobbs kind of split the 40s/50s on some features. I would also read up on the "Hatted Professor" website, it is a dating heaven for Dobbs. You can find it in a simple Google search.

Thanks for the guidance. Using Hatted Professor's guide, I'm suspecting Steve's Game Bird is 50's. May not jump into this one, but perhaps another model of Dobbs' in the future.
