Found this Game Bird Mixtures last week in an antique shop. Too small for me, 6 7/8, but I couldn’t pass it up. Research on this thread and for ads show ads from ‘35-39. Same for the Gilt Edge stamp on the sweat. Manufacturers tag is 40s or maybe transitional from the 30s tags to the 40s tags, according to my reading of Brad Bowers work.

Really cool black/gray heather with the fabric ribbon used on the Birds and Rainbows

Tag for the Trusize fitting system. Trusize is a cloth cord running under the reed tape that can be loosened or tightened.

$7.50 price tag puts it in the late 30s early 40s range

That is lovely, Richard. It's a kind of felt I've never seen on a hat like this. I've seen it on stingy brimmed hats from the seventies. Ottmar Reich made a lot of those, but those don't come even close to this one. Gorgeous. Love the twisted knot on the bow as well. Great find!

Game Bird Mixtures
I found this in an antique shop last week. It's a 6 7/8 so doesn't fit me but I couldn't pass it up.
Dobbs Game Bird Mixture - The only ads I can find for Mixtures run from '35 - 39, It also has "Gilt Edge" stamped on the inside of the sweatband. Research on this thread and others shows the Gilt Edge referred to the way the raw edge was cut not to a Cavanaugh type edge treatment. The manufacturer's label is a 40s type label or maybe a transitional label so I think the hat is probably from 39-40 more or less. Amazing condition for an almost 80 year old hat.

Thanks Stefan, The felt really is pretty outstanding

Snagged this Dobbs last week. The color doesn't photograph well. It's actually gray. The picture looking down on the hat is pretty good for color. It's another tall hat. The crown is 6" open, 2 3/4" brim with cavanagh edge. I think it's 50/60s.

Currently watching a late 40's Dobbs Game Bird, on eBay. I've seen posts about this on the Lounge--Can anyone vouch for the quality of the Game Bird hats of this era? I have heard good things about Dobbs hats generally.
