Wow.. havnt seen a Cross Country with a Cavanagh edge. Not my hat. A nice Dobbs Cross Country Deluxe for sale on Etsy now. Note the sweatband has the Cavanagh Edge patent stamp on it, so this is likely a 1930's hat, I imagine. It's said to have a 2 1/2 inch brim.
Don't know, but maybe that's what makes it a Deluxe. I decided to go ahead and buy it after all.Wow.. havnt seen a Cross Country with a Cavanagh edge.
Nice catch Mike. I would imagine it is a pretty rare hat. I think those summer weight hats like cross country and vagabond were kinda popular priced at around $5. I’m guessing a lot of folks didn’t go for the upgrades on them.Don't know, but maybe that's what makes it a Deluxe. I decided to go ahead and buy it after all.
Doesn’t get much more classic than that—nice addition, Mike!1950's Dobbs Forty I just bought. Someone stuck a wind trolley from some random brown hat on it. 2 3/4 inch brim.
Here's a weird homburg I picked up. I didn't bother to ask about brim width and crown height because I hoped the brown sweatband dated it on the earlier side and it was cheap. The factory label has a block depth so I figure it's from the 1950s or so, but the felt is nothing to write home about (or I'm just ignorant). The hat is very light, and the felt is thin but pretty stiff, feels like paperboard when you try to shape it (i.e. it doesn't like me trying to put a pinch in it... not that I would but for example). Perhaps there's just a lot of shellac?
The brim is 1 7/8" and the crown height is 4 1/8" at the front and back and maybe 4 7/8' on the sides.
I'm curious if anyone can shed any more light on this hat because I was unaware that homburgs could come in the stingy brim/crown category. I'm tempted to return it and look for something with larger proportions, or if I should just keep it as it seems to be in excellent shape for a hat that is 70ish years old.
Wondering if any light could be shed…I have a bid in for this Dobbs Golden Coach. The seller didn’t do a great job on photos but based on what I can tell of the interior if it is vintage it’s 1970s at the most but looking at the style it certainly doesn’t seem like a modern hat…it even looks like a Cavanagh Edge. I’m going to ask for more photos but I’m on the edge of passing. View attachment 544853
Yeah, it’s a nice looking hat and it appears to be fur felt but the listing has so little info I’m a bit weary.A sharp looking hat. I love the color combo and the gills ribbon. Hard to tell from the photos if it is Cavanagh edge or not. But I do think that edge did continue on a few high end hats past 1970.
That is a purty one there Bob, like that ribbon contrast.1950s Dobbs Game Bird. Size 6-7/8. 2-3/4” hidden-stitch under-welt brim, 5-3/4” open crown with 1-3/4” ribbon. It was quite dirty and may not completely clean up without disassembling it.
