The finished and shaped hat, all with just steam and my hands:

The felt on this hat is shockingly good. The 4 horseshoe rating doesn’t sound impressive, but it’s as nice as some of the pure beaver felt I’ve handled…and even better than some.
I believed in your vision all the way through. :) Way to see this diamond in the rough!

Great job, Brent. That turned out to be a honey of a hat.

Thanks, Jim. I’m not sure what to do with the hat, but it deserves a good home.

You might want to check with Nick F***it first just to make sure he hasn't beaten you to the punch. ;)

But seriously, nice hat and nice shape!

I’m waiting for his 15 minutes to be over. I don’t care about his custom builds but I’m tired of seeing nice vintage hats being vandalized in the name of creating some bohemian artwork.

I just received my first Dobbs, a 50s Gay Prince in dark blue velour. I'm guessing it's 1950s anyways based on the liner design and the oilskin liner tip protector. Its a pretty standard 2 3/4" brim and has a 4 1/2" crown as bashed, the brim and hat band stitching are in great shape. It shows some light mothing in a few spots and the sweat band is a little wrinkly, but is still nice and soft.

Ohhh Lordy that is spectacular! I’m thinking possibly 40s. Manufacturing tag might tell the tale. Be careful with that sweat though. Congratulations Simeon

Joe, I was looking back over some other posts about the GPs and was wondering is there a connection between crown height and age? It seems like later hats had a 5 1/2" crown but I think you had one that was 5 3/4" like this one. Maybe it could be late 40s?

I’m not sure on the crown height/age thing. But could make sense. I also have GP I had estimated 1950s… looking at my notes on that I had the open crown height between 5 1/2 and 5 3/4….

This is the tag on my ”40s” GP

i cant see the bottom of your tag…. It may be earlier in the “50s uniform manufacturing tag” run. Remember also. It’s not like EXACTLY Jan 1, 1950 they started with the new tags.. there can be some leeway on either side

Still not a perfect picture but you can see the labels on this one.

He's just another putz who has no respect for anything that existed before him, especially if he can somehow make a few bucks by applying his particular brand of stupid to it.

This looks to be, based on the liner crest, the fact that it has the block depth listed on the label (4??? Short! That's not what I'm used to seeing in the pics of this label!!!!), and the plastic tip protector, from the early 50s? If the protector wasn't there, I'd think it was a mutant 40s model. From what I've seen (thanks to the Hatted Professor page), the plastic tip started in the 50s.... If the block depth wasn't there, I'd be confident that it was a 60s model. Certainly from the lower end of the spectrum, it is still in great condition.
