Has Paddy just flipped? I hear you ask!!

Nooooo, nothing so exciting I'm afraid!!

This was me at Halloween, the bewitching hour, as I let a 'wee bit' of the Byronic Dracule come out (before trick or treating with a friends kids). So any others out there, venture to the dark side of vintage for a spot of Gothika? there is a certain Victorian romance about the whole thing, standing on a windswept clifftop with Whitby abbey to your back, tasting that 'biting' salt soaked air.

The windswept-cliff thing sounds damn appealing, but I'm 20 C. enough to want a stout suit of tweeds and a mac.
I suppose I could be enticed towards face paint if it were waterproof. Perhaps I could be the zombie gamekeeper hungry for larger BRAAAINS than found in grouse and pheasant.

The gothic surely has its charms--all those 1930s Universal horror movies. I've never dressed that way but I've thought about doing so.

Also, there's a photographer I love who works a lot in the gothic taste; his book on Poe is one of my favorites.

I am to be found striding the windswept cliffs above Whitby several times a year. Much more likely to be wearing the stout tweeds and mac, though I do have definite latent Goth tendencies.

A fantastic costume Paddy.lol lol lol It looks as if you wear red lipstick in this photo.
(The costume just reminds me of a Jack the Ripper film I watched on tv yesterday).

I'm very into psychobilly music & the scene. It's music that is basically the mixing of rockabilly, surf, blues, country, etc. with punkish tendencies, and "dark" lyrics. It's pretty much all tongue in cheek though, songs about zombie attacks, hot rod demons, etc. It's great fun!

And the style of the scene is very cool too, it's like a mixing of punk, vintage and goth sometimes. here are two psychobilly guys:

Of course, it's a far cry from "vintage", but I'd say the styles and sounds of the past are at least 85% responsible for how the scene is today.

Here in Tejas we have an offshoot called Vatobilly, that's a blending of Rockabilly and Tejano. A friend of mine was a founding member of such a bank back in the 90's, The Dropkick Chijuajuas. We used to be really into it too, then that led so swing, and you know were that led, this whole vintage obsession:eusa_doh:

Cliff? Standing on that dizzy edge...?

Resonating....

The cross-over for me was in Austin- the Rockabilly scene flopped over into some of the Goth scene.

WARNING: Potentially offensive generalization!

When pretty goth girls got tired of andro wanna-be vampires, they took their Betty Page bangs over to the Rockabilly and Swing scene (is the Cadillac still around?) and got them selves some old school men's.

B-but, i was into to it for the music....I swear. Truth.

Sadly there is no Cadillac in Austin. The one in Houston is now owned by the Landry's chain and is a...chain. We still have the Continental Club. If it's been a while since you've been to Austin you probably wont recognize it.

As far as the goth scene goes, I know some of them. Frankly they don't seem to do it very well most of them. There are a few that sport long hair, frock coats and such and look pretty good. and while I can kind of apprecviate the creativity thtawent into the invention if the scene 20 years ago, it is hard for me to appreciate punk or goth kids today as the look does not seem their own, but the generation before.

As far as the vintage style, I do know some Dickens fair people who are into recreating the romantic era look. Icall it that as I feel that romantic more accurately dcescribes the era from which they take the imagery.

If Goths were truly gothic, they would be dressing more like rennaissance fair people, or maybe like ravaging hoards of barbarians. But that is a discussion for another time perhaps.

Actually, ifi t were not for the goth scene, I would perhaps be tempted to wear frock coats and top hats and such. Love the look. But would not want to be lumped into a scene that I am not part of.

Interesting point. The girls of the scene have more flexibility as their look is still pretty traditionally female, or femme fatale if you will. That and they tned to be more into style and costume.

But the guys look is rather non modern masculine, more of an 19th century effeminite style, and they are usually not as into style in general.

SOme goth girls find androgynous or non masculin guys attractive, but I notice goth guys that can be truly goth, but are also kind of manly do pretty well.

Go us.

I didn't see any posts that were anything but people's honest opinions about what they think of a certain look. I don't recall anyone saying anything bad about the people behind the look, or impartiing harsh judgement upon them.
