Yes, Justdog, plenty of stiffener on my "20", too, especially the brim is like a stiff board. I've never really wanted to change the bash of this particular hat, I guess it could be done, but haven't tried it.
The felt surface is very soft.

How would you bash an Akubra DM Bushman?

The Bushman offered by David Morgan has a thin ribbon, a small vent hole, bound 3.25" snap brim, and a 5.5" open crown. If you click the pic of the hat at the link, you'll see some of the looks you can achieve with this open crown hat.

How would you bash it? I'm thinking of doing a front pinch teardrop (the way many bash the vintage ORs), but am also considering a cattleman's crease (like the current OR). Do you have any thoughts on what would work best with that larger 3.25" brim?

A diamond would look great too!

JohnnyB, that hat will take and look good with whatever crease you decide on. It depends on the look you're after...a more fedora look or a more western look. It's your hat, and you'll be wearing it on your noggin. If it were me, I'd style it how I like it.

I bought a Resistol a while ago that came to me with an open crown. When I started creasing it, it practically jumped to a cattleman, so I'm sure it had been that way before. I left it that way and wore it for a while, and now that's how it is all the time. I didn't think I'd like the cattleman, but I've found that I do.

Grandfather's hat.

Here are some shots of a hat that was my grandfathers. It shows a thin ribbon, and some interesting vent holes. There is a slight stitching around the edge of the brim, and what looks to be a vague six point bash. Must have been made for summer time. Very light weight. At 7 1/4, I won't ever be able to wear it.

I remember one day where he spent some time showing me how to bash a hat in different styles. Very interesting, and if I wasn't about nine years old, and it wasn't about forty five years ago, I might be able to remember it more. I must say, I do remember it pretty well though. I don't think he wore this hat much, if at all. He had others he would wear whenever he would go into the "City". He used his old ones for working around the property.

Thanks gentlemen. From what I know, it most likely is from the late fifties to early sixties. As you can see below, the Roos/Atkins stores where from those times. It's kind of cool to take something out of it's box and see the bash that your grandfather made way back when. I'm pretty sure all his fedoras were bashed in a similar fashion.

From Wikipedia:
Roos/Atkins was the name of a chain of upscale men's clothing stores based in San Francisco, California. It was formed through a 1957 merger of the Robert Atkins and Roos Brothers clothiers. The chain expanded after World War II to include several locations throughout Northern California, but declined in the 1980s; by the early 1990s all locations had been closed or sold to other retailers.

It wasn't my fault.

It just followed me home. Honest, Honey. Besides, you need a Thin Ribbon hat for those Thin Ribbon occasions. Besides, this one Resistol will get me in the BOTTR and the OR guild. Yes, dear, they are very important, prestigious clubs that will undoubtably enhance the family standing.

No, dear, I haven't lost any marbles recently. I'll be right back, I have to post my applications online. Of course I promise not to wear it to bed.

Great find on the ad, but I'd never peg that drawing as Burt Lancaster.

Totally off topic, but what's the story on the Colt in your avatar, Gene?

Thanks. I have no history on this one, got it off that famous online flea market advertised as a Fred Bear (the famous archer) hat. Here's me in it paddling thru the Okefenokee swamp with my son's BSA Troop... gtd
