The BORSALINO BROTHERHOOD

Interesting question. I don't think you can date a Borsalino reliably by the sweatband (if they can be dated reliably at all:)). The American market Borsalinos I own all have the patent and "made in Italy" on the sweatband, but all of them are vintage. So I'm unsure if the modern ones have the "plain" sweatband.

Ken,

My looking on this thread has led me to the conclusion that the Borsalino's with writing in the swoosh under the name are post-WWII. There are one or two on here that have OPS (Office of Price Stabilization) stamps.

If you dig around and draw some other conclusions certainly post them; a summary of findings always helps on this chaotic board!

Daniel

Thanks steur and Daniel for the reply and insight. I started reading some of the 445 pages of the thread and got the feeling of what you replied. I went and purchased a Borsalino based on the dimensions (7 3/8 and 2 3/4 brim) with a few pics with the only pic of the interior being that of the first pic (sweat). Also appears to be no liner. Regardless I will know Monday what I purchased after further inspection but it looks like I probably got more of a modern lid, oh well.

First of a series of Borsalinos.
Borsalino stingy fedora in green. Overwelt brim at almost 5cm and the crown at 10cm at the center dent. No label inside the hat. Well made hat, but to my eye the late sixties or seventies styling feels dated. And it's green; so not a keeper.

Second Borsalino and another green one! Just what is wrong with me?
Borsalino fedora in misto fronda (fern), which is a colour we haven't seen before. Always nice to add yet another colour to the vast Borsalino spectrum. Size 56 with the overwelt brim at 5cm and the crown at 10,5cm at the center dent. This one has a fuller crown and the pictures don't really do justice to the colourful felt. Weighs 103 grams and like the other one also a qualitá extra finissima. Also not a keeper. PM me if you're interested.

The third (and by far the best) one.
Borsalino Celesca in light brown. There is writing on the label with two words. The first one is Col (so Colore), but I can't make out what the second word should be. Size 56 with the raw edge brim at 5,5cm and the center dent at 9cm. Lovely hand to the thin felt and the hat weighs only 89 grams. Also a qualitá extra finissima. This one is a keeper.

Ok well... Don't feel bad. I can't see the green here. Maybe a tinge in the ribbon

Echter Borsalino "Sandurbar", Point 6 1/2, Open Crown 16 cm 6 1/4 inches, Brim 7 cm 2 3/4 inches, possibly late 1920s early 1930s. The "Ossido" color Felt is of medium weight, has a very soft hand and easily hand creases. There was a Wind Cord at one time and the Crown Tip Patch is missing but there are some glue remnants. I searched "Sandurbar" and it appears to be a port in the Western India State of Goa on the Arabian Sea. I think the name is out dated because there were only a few mentions and they were from the early 1900s.

That is just breathtaking. What a find, Steve. Ossido is a colour we're used to seeing on the ribbons, but not the felt. This is actually the first one. Sandurbar as a model name is also a first. Magnificent hat.

Stefan, Thank you! I am very happy I found it. :) I posted some photos in the WHAYWT thread. I think they show the color and dimensions better.

Borsalino Arrived

I snagged this one based on some poor pics and limited info (size and brim width). Quick measuremnts 6" open crown, 2 3/4" brim contrasting thin ribbon (originally thought it needed replaced-poor pics), missing liner. Very soft, thin, smooth and pliable felt. Felt is not like any of my moderns or limited vintage hats but does remind me of a 40s Stetson I had for a short time that I sold due to fitting too tight. From the label appears from 1980.

I’ll let the experts give you a date or date range, but that’s older than the 1980s. Looks like it was refurbished and re-blocked in 1980. Beautiful hat too.

The tag looks like it was made between 1961-1965 if I go by what has been shared earlier on this site. Looks like your gamble paid off. They don't always work out that great. I am waiting for a vintage Stylepark Templeform fedora I snagged yesterday soon after it was listed. Only two photos provided and seller would not answer questions. It was cheap enough to gamble I may have a good find. But it could turn out a beater hat.
