The BORSALINO BROTHERHOOD

Sometimes the French tendency to keep things to themselves pays off. This one flew under the radar because the seller had it listed to ship inside France only. He was very forthcoming however when I asked him if he would ship it to Les Pays Bas.
We had a deal in no time at all. What can I say? The stars aligned for this one.
Guiseppe Borsalino was an apprentice at Berteil and apparently Berteil didn't forget their pupil when they stopped making hats themselves. Borsalino made this for his old teacher (well, sort of).
Borsalino Nutria in Rodio colour. Felted edge at 5,5cm and crown 10cm at the pinch. Ribbon in the colour Asfalto. The bow is attached further inward to leave the bow ends loose. Liner is not Borsalino, but Berteil. Very lightweight hat at 85 grams and the felt is not as "springy" as other nutria hats, but shapes with no effort at all. I get the feeling this was a top of the line hat.
Biggest surprise: it's not all that old actually: 1980!

Two recent additions for this thread. Let's start with this one: Echter Borsalino Export Qualität Debrosan in nero. Size 59. Bound brim at 6,5 cm and crown 10,5cm at the pinch. Lovely pliable felt with a nice soft hand. Borsalino hatmaking at its best with a nice mid size ribbon treatment.
Had this for about a week now and today it was time to take some pictures of it between the first signs of what may turn into fimbulvetr. Some droplets can be seen on the hat; had to hurry!

Daniele and Steve, thank you. These Borsalinos keep fascinating me.
Indeed they do, Stefan. Just when you think you're done with them, some guy or other on the FL shows a Borsalino or two that just sucks you back in [emoji4]. They're the benchmark every other hat is made after, if you ask me.

Bud deserves "Big Brother" of "The Borsalino Brotherhood" status for that just perfect hat he posted here. Is that your favorite, Bud? I'm coveting it. Forgive me. Here's my Borsalino straw. Do straws count?

Hi all, There's a straw Borsalino i'm looking at ( long distance ) with a size tag that states 7 1/2.

Would this be US sizing ? I'm between 59 ( 7 3/8 ) and 60cm. One 60 Akubra i have is a loose fit and a Stetson i have in 59 is a little snug but is fine now that i have stretched it.
They say Borsalino's run small so i'm thinking maybe this 7 1/2 may be too tight. It has a leather sweat band.
I'm new so can't post photo's but would appreciate any opinions.

I’m too have found that many Borsalinos run small; however, there have also been several exceptions to that. I’m afraid no one can tell you with any certainty if the hat will fit you. It’s part of the risk we all take buying hats without being able to try them on first.

A little bit back in this thread I listed three Borsalino Peluche hats in size 61 (7 5/8) that fit more like size 60. Now I have three hats that don’t fit me. That’s just part of the nature of the beast.

Good luck.

If it's a old vintage Borsalino sold in Europe, it could very well be the old French size 7 1/2 which would equal a US 7 5/8 or 62 cm. In my experience, vintage Borsalinos with French size tags tend to run a little smaller.

This is my gift of Saint Lucia for myself
2lucutc.jpg

It arrived with such an advance day so the tradition was respected
2rpte6w.jpg

Borsalino Qualità Extra Extra Superiore, size 6 or 59 centimeters or 7 3/8 USA
zx1pwk.jpg

The color is "Cafro" and the "Driasti" type
imm2bs.jpg

The felt is dark brown finished in velvet
29zs9j5.jpg

It arrived with a beautiful Borsalino box and was certainly bought in London in the early seventies
4fx1uf.jpg

The proportions are as follows: the crown is 12 cm high, the raw brim is 6.5 cm. and the ribbone is 2.5 cm tall
1035wld.jpg

The interior is in excellent condition and someone has removed the yellow oilskin protection that covered the internal brand
szzqcm.jpg

Another enigma in the complicated events of Borsalino: no name of the seller is on the sweatban, only "Tipo esportazione" (export type)
ixseo4.jpg

The brand is the same on millions hats
2ic02gm.jpg

For the features, materials, finishes and label in paper make this Borsalino a serious candidate to belong to the 50s
