I knew I had one, turned out there were four. A friend recently gave me this Stetson 3X Beaver Open Road. It cleaned up well. I changed the catleman's crease to a center bash with a front pinch, and put a slight dip in the middle of the front brim. It is a snap brim, still. Oh yeah, he said the hat is about the same age I am!

Thirty-nine and holding?

vanwotan, You got a beautiful, high quality hat, at a very good price. However, don't be surprised if the color is darker than the first picture. It has been my experience that the most accurate color is usually shown in the picture which includes the sweatband and liner. Let us see a head shot, when you get it. :eusa_clap :eusa_clap

I may have missed it, but what about 4X Stetsons?
I just looked on my vintage Open Road and it is marked 4X.
The marking is faded but I will try for a photo tommorrow when the sun is out.

Here is a shot of the liner

I'd like to join the club...

Here is my 3x. It's a Stetson 15 stingy and it was NOS, I'm not sure of the year but I'm guessing the mid to late 50s...

Viper Man, Beautiful! Don't you love those hats whose crowns can be "dry" shaped so quickly? I have a Stetson Standard Quality like that. They are almost six hats in one! :eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap

Thanks, J.T.! You've got some beauties as well. The 3X felt is some of the softest and most pliable I have had the pleasure to feel. This thing is definitely a shape shifter, too. It will literally take any kind of bash you throw at it.

Here's my 1950s 3X Stetson cowboy hat from Washer Bros.
I took the cattleman bash out and put in what you
see. The photo doesn't capture the beautiful almost
ivory glow of this felt. The brim is stiff, but you can
do a lot with that crown. I'll have to get photos of
some of my other 3X hats. Actually if you sift around
you can find my 3x fedora with the Mode Edge. What I
need to post is the suede finish fedora.

Narrow ribbon fans take note. It doesn't get a lot narrower than this.

And Bud, I believe this counts as a cowboy hat.

Sweet, Feltfan. I love the color. :eusa_clap That's some mighty nice composition in your photo, too. :) Can someone explain to me the difference between a "mode edge" and an over welt?

Glad you liked that. It's a nice hat. So's yours. Those vintage
3X hats are a good thing!

The mode edge is a felted edge, probably produced under
the patent for the Cavanagh Edge. Here's more information,
including a picture of my Stetson 3X fedora with a mode edge:

3X Brothers...

I've been wearing both of these 3X's a lot this summer. They are both identical in terms of felt, sweatband, liner -- one's just the big brother of the other. Oddly enough, I found this pair within a couple of weeks of each other on the 'Bay. The ribbon on the larger lid is the same as on its little brother -- just two of them sewn together to double the size. And, in the sun, the 3 1/2" brim does a nice job of providing some shade. The felt on these is sturdy, but very soft and smooth at the same time. Love the ivory color.
