Douglas, the hats in photos 2 and 4 of your first post on this thread are different lids, correct?

Cheers,
JtL

JtL, Yes they are different. Both are 3X and both have the Mode Edge. Pic#2 is moss colored and #4 is pale blue gray with the rooster pin.

JtL: Here goes. The protective covering is coming loose, though.

So you're speculating that the X system and Royal, etc. names were used simultaneously? Kinda looks that way, eh?

fatwoul: Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, it is rather distinctive. The color is considerably darker than it appears in the photos.
I've always called 'em "pleated" bows. I don't know if that's what the hatmakers called 'em, though.

J.T.: Hmmm ... ya really think so? I wouldn't wanna waste all that dough the Witness Protection Program has shelled out.

I very rarely wear this hat, and I'm not really sure why that is. It could be that I baby this one a bit, but I do that with most of my vintage lids, and they get worn more frequently. And there is also that it's a quite large hat, so in contrast with most of my others it looks a bit "off" when I plop it on my noggin. At least initially. But really, it does go quite well with certain attire. Worn with boots and jeans it fills in well enough as a cowboy hat, for instance.
This hat was acquired from a fellow Lounger via the FL classifieds, by the way. I've bought and sold a few that way, and have always found it to be a much more pleasant (and certainly less stressful and risky) experience than buying on OFAS.

I just consulted my old "Dating Vintage Stetsons by Price" thread. There was a newspaper ad for a 3X Beaver Open Road dating to 1950. [Price was $10 --but, in researching info for that thread, I found that newspaper prices did not always track retail prices listed in official Stetson advertising.] So, looks like the 3X was a contemporary of the Royal Stetson, Royal DeLuxe, etc.

For the record, tonyb, is that protective covering on the liner the translucent material (not plastic)?

Cheers,
JtL

It's that transparent plastic stuff, Jimmy. It's gotten somewhat brittle and "crackly" (is that a legit word?), and is now just barely hanging on.

On my monitor this photo has the hat looking a light blue -- more blue than gray. But the shot in your avatar shows a decidedly grayer color. I'm guessing that the avatar photo is the more accurate one. Right?

I knew I had one, turned out there were four. A friend recently gave me this Stetson 3X Beaver Open Road. It cleaned up well. I changed the catleman's crease to a center bash with a front pinch, and put a slight dip in the middle of the front brim. It is a snap brim, still. Oh yeah, he said the hat is about the same age I am!

This Resistol 3X Beaver was in such great shape, I've done nothing to it, except wear it for the past five years. Sort of a western Homburg.

This low crown Resistol 3X Beaver Open Road was two sizes too big. I resized it and replaced the thin ribbon with a wide brown ribbon.

It's actually the color shown in this picture of the hat on my head.

Finally, a Resistol 3X Beaver Open Road with a raw edge. I left the cattleman's crease, added front and rear dents, and turned the front brim down (It will not snap, probably because the felt is the standard western thickness).

Excellent work in all cases, J.T., I like thin ribbon, you know, but I find that the western "shoelace" width or slightly wider barely qualifying as a ribbon, and therefore I'd change them most definitely. Good job, brother.:eusa_clap
