Dinerman, I've thought about getting one of those fuzzies. They have a definite charm about them. Do you wear it much?

I like the fuzzy hats, but if you get one, get one of the older wide brimmed ones. I wear it in the winter. It's a good deal warmer than other hats, even though the felt is thin.
I think the '60s fuzzies look like Tyroleans that had the wrong ribbon put on.

Here's the stetson with it's fuzzy little dobbs friend. The stetson has a deeper nap.

Marc -- That is really a beautiful lid! :eusa_clap It's interesting, I note that, like the 3X I recently acquired, the crown of your liner doesn't have any kind of protective covering. Makes me wonder if, on the 3x line, there was ever a time when no such covering was included (versus being removed by random owners). Anyway -- very nice find.

Another 3X for this thread...

Dinerman, your fuzzy 3X is just about the finest I've ever seen.

Incidentally, Wild Root (remember him?) has a fuzzy Stetson fedora from the '30s that has a deep blue satin lining. The hat itself is white!

.

I miss Root.... :(

But on a lighter note, I happened to be listening to "More than a Feeling" by Boston when I first saw Colby Jacks reply to your hat, and the hand clap was in perfect unison with the music, and I thought it was hilarious. I tried to get a video, but it was too late. I replayed the song and got it captured, but I don't think it worked out quite as well.

And these are all darn nice hats, I wish my stetsons were 3x's. Then perhaps they'd be as nice as the one's here.

Nice hats. I specially like the lighter hats. Look really classy.

On a side note, I checked the “stickies” and didn't find it so I'm going to ask, what's a 3x? I have also seen other numbers followed by X designations all over the boards. Thanks.

The "x's" denote the amount of beaver...the more x's...the better...unfortunately...each hat maker has their own version of x's...and how much beaver that represents.

Thanks, Douglas and J.T.

Douglas, the hats in photos 2 and 4 of your first post on this thread are different lids, correct?

Looks like this thread has kind of stalled. Any other 3X's out there? For the most part, from looking at auctions and threads here on the Lounge, it seems like the biggest 3X presence is in OR-style lids. I'm curious to know to what extent other styles were available in a 3X. Anyone have a sense of this?

Maybe Open Roads are so well represented among the 3X ranks because there are just so darned many Open Roads -- more than any other model, by quite a margin, I'd bet.
Like many of us, I'd like to get a stronger sense of when certain "grading" conventions were used -- you know, the various Xes and the Royal and Royal DeLuxe and Sovereign, etc. designations. I once thought that the X system was more recent than the Royal, etc., but I've since seen plenty of evidence to suggest otherwise, including my 3X Stetson Fifteen, which I'm fairly confident is older than some Royal and Royal DeLuxe lids in the collection.

That's a beauty, Tony. What does the liner logo look like? (does it have a protective covering?)

Your Stetson Fifteen must have cost $15.00, as did my 3X. Arguably, this was at a time when a Royal DeLuxe ran $12.50. Could the 3X have been the next level up the chain (?).

There are some great hats in this thread. I wish I could pull of wearing a fuzzy like Dinerman's. Maybe when I have been wearing hats a little longer. And then of course I'll need to actually find one. lol

I'm thinking there should be a fuzzy society on here. It would be almost as select in its membership as the Rare Roosters. ;)

Chevalier's contribution on here is also wonderful, that much goes without saying. Except I just did. Oops.

I like this one too, tony, particularly the bow. Does anybody know what those style bows are called? Do they have a name? Anyone?

So many interesting hats in this thread. It seems to stand out somehow.

tonyb, Super sharp 3X Stetson 15. I 'm sure it looks even better on your head than it does on top of the hatbox! :eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap
