I want a gray hat, probably lighter shade. Teardrop crown. Probably a 2 1/4" brim, maybe 2 1/2". I'm looking to spend under $100, but I might be willing to go over that.

The Akubra Federation IV from Hats Direct is in your price range. The moonstone color is a light gray. The Fed comes open crowned and you can easily bash it into a teardrop or diamond. There are many threads here to help with the bash. The brim is a little bigger than what you state and dimensional (longer in front and back), but it could be cut down. Western tack/clothing stores may offer that service.

I have a mid gray Dobbs Golden Coach with a 2-3/8" brim I won on eBay. It was originally purchased from Miller Hats according to the sweatband.

Yep, the moonstone fed. I love mine! Keep in mind that's an open crown hat so you'd have to bash the teardrop in yourself and the brim is dimensional, 2 1/2" on the sides and 2 3/4" in front and back...

The Akubra Stylemaster in grey looks like a nice hat to start with, and it comes pre-bashed.

You could always try the Scala Venice. Fur felt, 2 3/8" raw edge snap brim, teardrop crown, is a steel color, wind trolley cord with "button", satin lining, lambskin sweatband. They can be purchased for the sale price of $99.00 dollars at www.thefedorastore.com.

Most Australian online Akubra vendors seem to have the Stylemaster in "Mid-Grey." But you can also special order it in Moonstone, which is a light grey. A Stylemaster plus shipping to the US should come in at or under $100.
