Now that i've posted a picture I would love some suggestions for my next trip to the salon for color!.

My real color is a VERY dark brown and has some old foil weaved caramel color highlights in it. at my age I still do not have any gray hair, (my father got 'noticable' gray hair in his mid - 50s  ) my hair is also quite layered and I have to fight with it just to get bangs lol

My era is def the 40s & 50s, having said that, I feel real drab in my current au naturale color and want to feel glamourous:D

The most glamorous color to me has got to be, hands down, platinum blonde!

I read something in a magazine once, "Show me a brunette with straight hair who wants to be blonde and curly and I'll show you a bald woman." ;) I assume it refers the potential damage to the hair from over processing. At any rate, I'm not brave enough to go that extreme.

My second favorite glam color has got to be red. I have wished for red hair since I was a little girl. Seriously. I tried a dark auburn many years ago and adored it. The only downside is it fades fast on me, down to a brassy color I despise. You also have to consider a total color change in wardrobe and cosmetics depending on how red/warm you go.

The last look might be to go a darker, deeper brunette. It wouldn't be as drastic a change, but it can be dramatic. High contrast between dark hair and fair skin is really striking! (Look at the Besame' thread in Beauty and see the pics of our lovely ClubWitsEnd to see what I mean). I just wouldn't go pitch black or it becomes one dimensional, flat looking and can wash you out.

So, you don't have to worry about keeping grey covered. (Lucky you!) How much of a change are you willing to try? How often do you want to go back for root maintenance? Are you willing to switch your makeup colors and maybe even give up some favorite clothing colors to go with your new hair color? (My beauty accident...went too warm and couldn't wear the ice blue dress I had planned for the big wedding I was attending the next day.)

What color are YOU thinking?????

Platinum blonde is indeed a glamorous colour, and was popular from the 30's through 50's. Unfortunately, a brunette wanting to go white blonde would likely be a bald woman - Check out this thread for problems and advice.

A honey blonde would be far less damaging and easier to keep, though much depends on your skin tone.

A warm chocolate or auburn would be lovely, and definitely the safest choice given your natural brunette tones.

And, as always, red is a highly popular and glamorous colour. There are a few threads around here on going red:

I highly recommend this thread to you. The OP has naturally brown hair, and there follows a great discussion about all hair colours.

This is a great thread on hair dye, for when you decide to take the plunge.

Good luck!

Sonia, you remind me of my sister. Even in her mid-50s when she died, I don't think she had a gray hair. It was thick, beautiful chestnut brown.

If you really don't like your hair color, though, going a few shades lighter would be OK. I don't think red would look good with your cool skin tone, and you don't have the skin tone, eye color or facial features of a blond.

I just went platinum from DYED BLACK hair and I still got all my locks....

It's indeed glamourous. I love being platinum. I feel so cute and natural in it! Black really wasn't the image I wanted to portray (people kept saying I reminded them of all this mainstream goth stuff that I either hated or had no clue of!) and my natural red colour just makes me feel like a dork :(

...still got all her locks and her pincurl ROCKS!

AJ how often do you have to touch up the roots? And is your red lighter or darker naturally?

LOL I would never go blond! When I was 16 people told me I looked like a china doll, skin was porcelain and hair was espresso brown.

I am a naturally very dark brunette. I have had my hair quite vibrant red for pretty much consistently since late high school with a few exceptions here and there. I currently have my hair at a very dark reddish color when I say currently I mean the within the last two days (when I go back close to my natural color it is always because keeping up with roots is getting on my nerves). I was going for mahogany but it is a bit darker. Though up against a black shirt it is not quite black. I say either go vivid red, or a really rich deep brown. I saw that 23skiddoo mentioned that the dark hair loks nice against pale skin and it is a nice contrast. I will be honest that was part of the draw to the dark hair once again, I have a thing for contrast and considering I am lilly white it does offere a fabulous contrast. She aslo mentioned having to change makeup. I have not hade this problem in my resent hair change, all of the makeup that I used when i was red work now too. But that could have something to do with my natural color having quite a bit of red in it too. I have also not had to give up any of my colors, but then again teal and emerald go with just about any color hair.

This is the color I would like. bearing in mind that the pic I have as my avatar I look (was) tired, sappy skin tone, no make-up and my hair is a mess held together with hair combs :( my eyes are quite big and dark brown.

Grant , I would never consider make-up and wardrobe colors to really fit a certain hair/skin tone... Madonna, by her own admission, has dyed her hair every color and has always looked good.

Lucille Ball looked natural as a redhead despite being a 'mousy brown'. she also fascinated me as a Marilyn blond and was just as captivating when she wore black wigs in a few episodes;) guess its all how you carry yourself eh?

The only woman I think looks very fake is Ditta Von Teese :p

Forgot to mention that my color would be done by a professional and i'm thinking of an all over color vs weaves. I had an all over color done a yr ago where the colorist told me i'd get a warm brown, afterwards and for a few months it just looked like mud

Of course it would. All hair colour loses intensity and vibrance after a few weeks, let alone a few months. Water and sun are the two biggest colour killers.

I think that picture you posted of Dorothy/Judy Garland would look really nice. If you wanted to keep it, though, you'd be looking at touching it up every 6 weeks, either at home or in the salon :)
