Spam turns 80!

Well, this is big news in Hawaii, where spam enjoys great popularity. It is a common fast food item in the form of spam musubi. Spam and eggs for breakfast is an island favorite. My wife has converted me and I have personally declared spam fried rice as one of my comfort foods.

For me, of course, one of the attractions is that spam has its roots in the golden era. It was during WWII that spam was introduced to the archipelago by the US military. I accept that spam is one of those "either you hate it or you love it" items with little room for neutrality. However, after many visits to my wife's home state, I have developed a sentimental fondness for the much maligned mystery meat. Aloha!

I always keep a couple of cans in the cupboard for emergencies. I like fried spam and eggs, also fried spam and cheese sandwiches.
