Soundtracks I own:

Little Miss Sunshine, which got me into Devotchka
Good Will Hunting, which got me into Elliott Smith
Moulin Rouge
Down with Love
Stop Making Sense
Henry and June
Pretty in Pink, which is probably my favorite
Veronica Mars (TV--does this count?)
Sense and Sensibility, I love Patrick Doyle
Bernard Herrmann's Hitchcock scores
I love Danny Elfman's music too--used to own the Batman soundtrack but it disappeared during some move of mine.

Some of mine that are close at hand:

• Falcon and the Snowman. Love that Pat Metheny!

• Silver Streak. Love that Henry Mancini!

• A Charlie Brown Christmas. Love that Vince Guaraldi!

• Monk. With due respect to Randy Newman, the 1st season theme was delightfully reminiscent of Django Reinhardt; more Fedora Lounge appropriate.

• For A Few Dollars More and Fistful of Dollars. A and B sides of the sountrack album. Classic Spaghetti Western.

• The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly: See above.

• Yellow Submarine. I never get tired of the Fab Four.

• A Hard Day's Night. Ditto.

• Help. Ditto.

• The Prisoner. Who is Number 1? You are, Number 6.

• The Carl Stalling Project. A collection of music from Warner Brothers cartoons.

You Spinal Tap fans may be interested to know that my list goes to 11. :)

Confessions of a music junkie

Like a few others here at the Lounge, my score collection is a bit too lengthy to list, numbering somewhere at 250+ CDs. One of note, that many of you fellow loungers would probably really dig, is the score to "The Cooler" by Mark Isham. Yeah, it's about 50/50 score and songs, but the songs are all old standards (admittedly rerecorded by modern artists, but not rearranged or modernized at all). The score, though, is a blast, and I knew I had to own it before the film's intro credits had finished scrolling. It's one of the loungiest that I've ever heard; the perfect for sitting back and sipping a Manhattan to. It can be tough to find, though; I found my copy in the bargain bin for three bucks.

I also heartily recommend almost anything by Henry Mancini, particularly his "Breakfast at Tiffany's", which can't be beat for it's 1960 pop-jazz sensibilities.

Scores that I have a particular affinity for (that haven't been mentioned yet) include the late great Basil Poledouris' "Conan the Barbarian" and "Les Miserables", the late great Jerry Goldsmith's "The Thirteenth Warrior" and "The Shadow", David Arnold's "Shaft", Shaun Davey's "Waking Ned Devine", Philip Glass' "Kundun" and "The Hours", Nicola Piovani's "La Vita e Bella" and John Barry's "The Lion in Winter".

Trying to divine my favorite score is like trying to figure out what my favorite car, movie, or kid is. It's dicey, no matter what!

Soundtracks

I've been collecting soundtracks since I bought the LP of 2001: A Space Odyssey some years ago. Here's what's "on the turntable" lately:

1) Chicago (the stage musical with Gwen Verndon, Chita Rivera and Jerry Orbach)

2) V for Vendetta - how happy I was to discover this film and score

3) Crash - haunting throughout - that Isham didn't even get a nod with an Oscar nomination for this was just wrong

4) Grand Canyon - James Newton Howard - I recently rediscovered this in my collection

5) Layer Cake - Almost everything I could ask for in a soundtrack (and images of Daniel Craig dancing in my head ;)

6) Erin Brockovich - Thomas Newman - funky, haunting, perfect

7) Angels in America - Thomas Newman - beautiful and sublime

9) Cabaret - the movie soundtrack - hands down best musical

9) The Buena Vista Social Club - (I'm also listening a lot lately to Cooder's Paris, Texas soundtrack)

10) Bond, Beat and Bass - what a hip mix of Bond themes by electronica artists. With names like Voight-Kampf and Ot Zehn how can you go wrong.
