fftopic: Card catalogs! Why did they get rid of those?

1. Space.
2. They're a pain to update.

4. Nobody but you and a few other luddites actually want to use them.

Well how many of you have a FCC Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit? I do Ok it is a non-commercial educational broadcast one when I was a DJ at the college radio statio (88.1 FM KVSC) in St. Cloud.

A couple of weeks ago, I got a new cell phone; my old one, which is 2 years old, is already outdated. I wanted one with more power as I live in a part of Des Moines that is hilly and the towers don't always reach -- was getting a lot of dropped calls.

Problem is all I wanted was a phone with good power, so I can make and receive calls. All their better cell phones had features I did not want. I do not need to take pictures, or make videos of public hangings, or entertain myself constantly with games and text messaging. I told the phone folks, "you know there really is a market out there for people who only want a good phone and don't have the need to multi-task and/or be entertained 7/24. I don't need a cell phone to take my blood pressure or tell me the time in Tokyo."

So, I now have a phone with features I don't care to have, but at least it has good power and, best of all, there was a cheat sheet instruction booklet with it so I don't have to sift through a manual the size of War and Peace to figure out how to work the darned thing.

The only thing I go all-the-vintage-way on would be movies. I RARELY watch movies made after the early 1940s. My passion is with movies from the 1920s and especially the 1930s. I have so many unwatched movies that I've recorded that I just don't have time for anything else. I barely have time for my 1930s movies.

But even then, I watch them at home on a DVD player; not in an ornately gorgeous theatre. Ok, I guess it's impossible to go all-the-vintage-way with my movie viewing adventures!! I tried!

At this moment in time I need my computer and tv for work and secretly I love using my mums washing machine as its a pain to do the old handwashing style.
On the other hand, i prefer my wooden drying reck in front of the fireplace to a tumbledrier.
I love the smell of antique soap washed clothing drying in front of the fireplace.

All you need do is remove a row of computers and there's the space. I'll give you the pain to update. My point is that too often technology takes on a life of its own and the possible becomes the ought to without stopping by the should we. By the by, my shoes are firmly on my feet.

Thanks for the suggestion, Paisley, I do try to check online first, but sometimes think of something on the drive in.

I do! Issued 10/8/1983, when I was working in my first radio job -- WBME, 1230 kc, 1000 watts, Belfast Maine!

I miss library card catalogs too.

For cooking/baking, I have to do it fresh from scratch. I just have to. I don’t really use my microwave, or frozen dinners, or food from cans/boxes much. For sewing and cleaning, I go with the old Grandma ways.
I do, however, enjoy a few modern conveniences;
I take my cell phone everywhere with me so I can keep track of my son and for safety reasons. I make no apologies for that. I know a couple of you are text addicts. My honey refuses to own a cell or blue tooth, but he has a PC. Obviously all of us posting here use a computer once in awhile.
I seriously can’t live without decent air-conditioning.
I have Direct TV. Even though I don’t watch it much, it’s nice to have 24-hour news access, comedy central, the history channel, TCM, XM radio, etc.

This was in the fall of 1969 when I was a Freshman at WPI. I had helped to set up the station, and wanted to be a DJ. But our format was acid rock, which I knew absolutely nothing about. One of my friends programmed my spot for me but warned me to play only the selections he had indicated. Apparently some of the other cuts contained material inappropriate for broadcasting.

All went well until I got a call from the guy who was to follow me. He would be an hour late, so I had to fill in for him. And I was out of selected cuts. I began playing public service announcements and artists like Petula Clark and the Beach Boys, that I knew were "safe". Soon, the phone rang. It was the program director. He fired me on the spot! Now, if only our format had been big band and swing...

WICN is still in existence and it's what I listen to when I am driving. They play jazz and folk and have a great big band brunch on Saturday mornings!

I still live in the Worcester area but somehow have forgotten all about WICN. Thanks so much for clueing me in...I will definetly check it out. I guess I got my wish for big band music on WICN after all...only 38 years too late!

But I couldn't really do without the internet...it's been an invaluable source of information and being able to meet other people who just love the Golden Era as much as I do.

...something I just can't get around here in this area.

I totally understand how you feel about not wanting to be bothered by anyone. There are 12 people downstairs and I am up here visiting the FL because I can't take it anymore. I love my family to pieces but can only take them in small doses. .

Normally I enjoy being around people, but I do need alone time in order to recharge.

As a (former) librarian, I really must object to the nostalgia for the old card catalogues... bleh... just a huge, dusty, game of 52-pickup waiting to happen if you so much as look at it wrong... Very quaint and nostalgic and all, but the computer or internet catalogue is better by far, for numerous reasons.

If you really want one we've got a few of our ancient ones in the library basement... I'm sure they'll let you have 'em for a price! lol


But yes, my mobile has been sitting in the charger for three days now... its starting to collect dust lol

...and learning to type on a typewriter.

I guess though, there are good and bad to both (as with anything), the computers shut down, and there goes your searching...so it would be good to have the cards as a back up...but, like Adelaidey said about the 52-pickup...:eusa_doh:
