"Oh leave it, that's what they get paid to do."

I have a cousin who, at age twelve, was asked by his mom to clean up his trash as we were leaving a Burger King one evening. I still remember his reply:

"They pay foreigners to do that !!"

His mom had a sense of humor and knew he was joking. That was in a time when a lot of parents would have slapped his face for saying that. He did, however, clean up after himself.

One of my peeves is people who shove shopping carts into the parking lot corrals willy- nilly, often creating a dangerous situation where carts will roll loose and hit a car, or worse. I lapse into OCD mode when I see that, taking it upon myself to organizing the carts according to size and getting them fitting together nicely. Drives my wife crazy.

I've done that several times, along with straightening out buckled floor mats, picking up litter in parking lots (and sidewalks, and parks, etc.), and tidying up the milk/cream/sugar/lids counter in coffee shops. I've been both complimented and looked at like I have three heads.

They call it, "rolling coal." It's supposed to be an expression of machismo (as Lizzie notes) against "wimpy environmentalists" and it's usually implemented by some insecure jerk who has the need to make that sort of statement- and earns every laugh that he gets.

There's a word (several, really) for people whose public behavior gives every indication of being objectionable by design, for the sake of nothing more noble than objectionability itself.

We might all find objectionable the expression of views in conflict with our own, and we might offer contrary views. We might find our adversaries in such exchanges ill-informed or even illogical, but still accept that they hold such views in good faith. It's hard to fathom, though, how a person can deliberately make a blatant spectacle of polluting the air in the expectation that such behavior would win the respect of any reasonable adult. We're left to wonder if perhaps such a character doesn't know what a reasonable adult is.

That is a mentality that annoys the heck out of me. Students who believe that cleaning up after them is the job of the custodian doesn't fly at the school wherein I work. We are noted as consistently having the cleanest campus in the district. One of our mottos is that we do not have littering and that is because the alternatives are not enjoyable. The pride of having such a clean campus helps as well, it is contagious. :D

Yup. Litter invites litter. Can't have it.

My previous physical medicine doctor was notorious for running late. The last time I saw him before he retired, I was taken into the exam room two hours after my scheduled appointment time and still waited another 15 minutes before he walked in.

Something similar happened to me, oh, thirty or so years ago. When the doc finally entered the examining room, I said, "Doctor! I'm glad to see the rumors weren't true!"

He looked at me with a puzzled expression and said, "Rumors?"

I said, "Yeah, the rumors that you joined the Foreign Legion."

Cannot permit it. Will not. Do not. On the occasion that it appears, not only is our campus cleaned, the parking lot of the main campus and all areas surrounding our campus as well. This tends to work well as the other options are less palatable to our population. It helps that we have a really good group of kids, a great atmosphere, and consistency in our application of discipline.

If you see someone in Germany, heaving drinks from the shopping cart into the car-trunk, standing with one feet on one of the shopping-carts wheels, it's me. :D Accident-prevention, "SAFER-SHOPPING". ;) No need, that the shopping-cart bumps into your own silver-grey auto-paint.

German radio, OMG. The "silly-season stuffing serivce" whips out the boobies, again. The old discussion on public breastfeeding.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Boobies are a private thing, that's it. ;)

I've grown used to seeing political campaigns sling mud and fan the flames of fear, but I've never seen it devolve to the pits of this cycle. Can you imagine Lincoln and Douglas debating on the size of the other's "hands"? I wouldn't vote for any major party candidate for my local school board, let alone the President of the United States.
