I would suggest two CDs: Sinatra at the Sands and The Rat Pack Live at the Sands. Also, there's a biography out in 2005 called "Sinatra the Life" by Anthony Summers. Made me respect Frank as an artist more, and as a person, less.

As Frank Jr. said, (paraphrased) his dad probably had every weakness and strength a human being could have, a pretty complex yet seemingly simple guy. Only a little guy 5'10" and 120 lbs., he went pretty far on his own raw determination and acquired talent. I regularly enjoy his music but am sort of glad I wasn't a personal aqcuaintance that got on his bad side. Anyone find out for sure what hat he was sporting?

He was a creep. Dean Martin related how he liked to play mean tricks on people too. Martin opened his dressing room door one day to find a naked starlet in his room, she smiled prettily and said Frank had advised her that she could further her career by visiting Martin and showing her wares....Martin replied "That's very nice dear, but you must remember that Frank is an asshole"....
He did look cool though :)

Jeff.

Story I heard was that Sinatra gave a young....lady $1000 to go & wait for Dean in his room. Dean gave her $1000 to go and tell Frank that Dean was wonderful!!

From what I've read, Francis Albert was the best friend or the worst enemy you had........and those were your choices. THE WAY YOU WEAR YOUR HAT is by far my favorite style book. Wish I had a quarter of the style those guys had. (well....maybe not Sammy lol )

Try "Live and Swingin': The Ultimate Rat Pack Collection." Comes with a DVD and a CD. Absolutely hilarious!!!!

I play a couple of "Live Rat Pack" DVDs here at the store on our plasma TV. No one has every objected (I honestly think if they did, I'd throw them out). Everybody loves to watch and listen to them. Their live performance gives my store a touch of class and because the boys are truly having fun on stage, the DVDs add a bit of levity to our shop.

Cavanagh.

I remember reading somewhere long ago that his daughter confirmed that Sinatra wore Cavangh and she was seeking help to find a Cavanagh to put in a museum for him.

Way to go Marty. I'd want to throw them out too, if they complained. I wish stores here would play some classy music or film clips on in their shops, rather than the THUMPA-THUMPA-THUMPA way-too-loud computer noise that's supposed to be music that you get here.

So Frank wore Cavanagh lids . . . man this place is a wealth of information!

Have you read the Sinatra book "The Way You Wear Your Hat." Really fun. It's got a lot of his personal style musings ("No brown after 5 PM, Clyde. Go home and put on your tux.") and little bits about shining your shoes by rubbing them briskly under couch mats, etc. Pretty cool.

Harry Lime

Now, I wanna know...

How do you get this book?

To exclude Sammy Davis, Jr. would be short changing yourself.
Sammy probably had the most (and varied) talent and style of all the Rat Packers.

Is this a Sinatra style hat?

5" crown Cavanagh with "Cavanagh Edge" with 1 7/8" brim.

Anyone have a guesstimate as to value-range for this hat? It is marked LO under the band.

Well, I paid $9.95 for an identical one in a lighter colored brown about a month ago but I paid $35 for an identical black one six weeks ago. [huh]
So, I guess the value range would be $10-$40. God bless ebay!

EDIT: Here's a photo of the black one...

By the way, these Cavanagh stingies are some of my favorite hats. Really nice felt!

It states in the book, "The Way You Wear Your Hat" by Bill Zehme, that Frank wore Cavanagh hats on page 115 (spelled Cavanaugh).

Oops. Thanks, Lou. I didn't realize there was a limit but I've made some space. :D

update to this thread

I thought this was an interesting subject and while searching I found this thread. I'm pretty sure I've narrowed down at least one of Sinatra's hats:
sinatra-frank-studio-5001154.jpg

I'm fairly certain that this hat is a Stetson Medalist because I had one just like (though I didn't realize it until I had already sold it off). Here's the medalist I had:
TopSideAngleBrimDown.jpg

SideAngleBrimDown.jpg

This medalist is a Stetson Milan hat. The one I had was a 7 3/8 and internet sources indicate that Sinatra's hat size was around 7 1/8, so at least I know I didn't give away Sinatra's actual hat :p

Sinatra's Milan straws as well as his stingy felts were made by Cavanagh

So is that medalist a fedora or a porkpie? I'm still trying to figure out the subtleties that differentiate the two. I've seen several pictures of Sinatra in that hat/a similar hat, and have always believed that he was more of a porkpie wearer than a fedora one.
