Silver and gold?

I like silver, and the things I wear on a daily basis (wedding band, watch and fob/chain) are either silver or steel. My collar bar, tie-chain, and most of my cufflinks are also silver in color.

However, my sunglasses and glasses are both fingerpiece style pince nez, and I've never seen these in silver, they are always gold. I know the importance of matching leather, but is it also good practice to match metals? It's really only this one thing I can't get in silver, until I get an old monocle, which I've also never seen in silver (so I guess this really is an eyewear problem).

Cheers,
Nick

Good question Nick D. I don't recall ever reading any "rules" for mixing/matching metal colors. If the glasses thing is bothersome, I know that some jewelers and metalcrafters can electroplate such items with a nickel finish. Something to consider?[huh]

Try to match as much as possible for the obvious reason, but don't lose sleep over the trivial things. Items that are worn in close proximity (a watch and ring combo, for example) will look better if the metals match in color. At the same time, if the braces that otherwise look terrific with your chosen outfit have gold or brass slides, I wouldn't exclude them solely for that reason. Remember: Dressing well isn't about dressing to abject perfection. It's about knowing the rules...er, guidelines...applying them, and not looking like you tried real hard to do it.

P.S. - Anyone who studies you closely enough to determine that your eyeglasses don't have matching metal trim with the rest of your wardrobe is probably bored to death by you anyway and therefore unworthy of your continued interest as well.

Perhaps you can find a piece which mixes them well, to accompany the others. I wear a platinum and gold engagement ring which does this nicely, although I usually stick to Gold or silver typically.

I would agree with the previous company in that the rule, quite generally, is that everything should be of the same tone. However, I tend also to personally agree with Orgetorix, in that I don't much care either way. To me, matching lends an air of studied affectedness and is a little OCD, both on your part, and on the part of the one who notices such things. lol

Yes, it is absolutely vital that all metals match. The rules are matching gold tone during the day and silver tone at night.

Until you want to do it differently. Fashion is about rules of the day. Style is about breaking them.

Just one guy's opinion. :)

P.S. Pince Nez are cool. I've never actually seen any worn. Pics please?

I'm afraid this is the only picture I could find of me wearing the regular pince nez (there are others with my sunglasses), right after I got them a few years ago with the original lenses. I had to turn my head becuase looking into the camera, they were barely showing up in the picture!

That's one of the things that's so cool about them -- the minimalism.

Looking good Nick. Very European.
