Bow is traditionaly on the left side of the hat. Why?
Is it some kind of statement; like men wear it on the left side and women on the right or something like that?
When did this start?
Cavaliers and various swordsmen wore long feathered plumes on their hats that reached nearly to the ground. The plume sprouts from the left side of the hat so a sword can be drawn with the right hand and not get tangled up in the feathers. Over time, the plumes got shorter, but the bow, a vestige of the long plume, stayed on the left side.
