Showoff! Why hats / fedora make the difference

I like how hats allow me to create such different looks.

That Bowler paired with the Black suit and Red Tie is outstandingly sharp!!
Not many guys can pull off a bowler like that.:eusa_clap I'm shopping for my 2nd hat now for winter and a little overwhelmed at all the choices out there

Y'know, the more I think about it it's just that, well, hats are great looking whether they're on our heads or not. Sure they improve a fella's looks by virtue of that fact. It'd be like, "Does this picture look better with just me in it or me with a beautiful girl on my arm?" Or, "Do does sitting in this classic Ferrari make this an interesting image or would it be better if I were just on a lawn chair?" I mean, c'mon, it seems that every guy here, no matter what they look like is gonna' look that much better with a nice lid on top! Does make it hard to fathom how they ever went (generally) out of style.

Now I hope this thread makes vague things clear now. Instead of asking "Why do you wear fedora?" it should be "Why don't you wear fedora?"

Like Yohanes, I do feel more confident in a fedora. I also think it's a good way to show your originality- I think that a man's choice of hat shows something about him. It's a great way to change and improve your appearance.

I'll have to agree with you on feeling more confident in a Fedora. it definitely improved my appearance and I think it's really cool to see younger guys wearing them with such style:eusa_clap I personally had never worn hats till I purchased my straw last month and I cannot tell you many people make comments like, "That hat is really you".. or "Wow, I need to get my man to wear a hat like that". try going to a party and being the only one there sporting a nice hat, everyone was asking me where I got it and what kind it was. I now find I wanna dress up all the way.. speaking of which I dig that pinstripe suit... I think my 1st is gonna be a pinstripe. Looking Good JP!!!!

Thank you gents for the kind words. I was apprehensive the first day I wore a fedora, but I was really nervous the first day I wore a derby! I've heard die-hard hat aficionados say that they would never wear anything as dated and "costumey" as a derby. I sat balderdash and poppycock. No matter what you do, do it completely and with utter conviction.

Good for you Slim. I think you carry it well. All in all we should wear what we are comfortable with. Me personally, I wouldn't ever, ever wear a derby or a homburg. I wouldn't wear a tophat or a boater. I wouldn't wear a super stingy brimmed hat. Likewise I won't wear a real wide brimmed cattlemans creased cowboy hat, or a taco brimmed cowboy etc of that type.

I wouldn't be scared to wear such hats in public. I just know I would look utterly ridiculous. I am not comfortable in them. We each find what works for us after wearing hats for a number of years. I wear traditional fedoras, with neither too narrow or too wide a brim. I wear traditional Akubra style hats, made for time in the outdoors, shooting and hunting and the like. All of those styles of hat fit my personality, style of dress and my activity lifestyle. I also like flat caps and newsboys in the winter. To heck with what other people think. However, I have rarely ever heard anything but compliments on my hats and style. As long as you seek to look better than the average bear even most average bears even admire that, I find anyway. Try multiple styles, especially those new to this and find what works for you. It may be different than what you think it will be or totally different than what got you into hats to begin with. For me I pretty much know after nearly 30 years in hats what I can and can't pull off.

True words, warbird. I admit that currently I am convinced that I could never pull off a top hat, and I have not yet found a homburg that looks right on me, but who knows what the future holds? I'm just glad that we have options, and that we have all found hats that work for us. I do want to encourage everyone to be open minded. Try new styles, and continue to post pictures where other like-minded people can give you feedback. All of the encouragement that I have received on this forum has certainly bolstered my spirit.
