There was a ebay link a while ago that had all the pattern numbers and the dates they were issued. I dont know if it still around. If anything go though ebay and do a search there.

Hello! I know this may be off topic, but how can you find out what year a pattern was made in if the envelope has no date? I have some patterns that I think may be 40's vintage patterns, but they have no year on them. Can anyone tell me how I can figure out the date?

Cemetarian.com has one of the most comprehensive guides online:

You can also post photos here, and I'm sure someone will be able to help. :) The clothing style, hair, accessories, and type of illustration pictured are good at roughly estimating a pattern's date.

Exactly. I always have a hard time when people that don't know what the periods look like but want to help me find patterns when they go thrifting ask me what to look for. You really just have to have a feel for the periods and what they look like. A sorta general guide I usually tell them is original price, but even this varied between brand and whether it was a designer pattern or just an average one.

Definitely. I highly recommend looking at lots of online vintage pattern shops (and the Vintage Pattern Wiki), as well as Ebay, for anyone who doesn't already have a feel for pattern dating - and who's willing to put in the effort. Ebay can be tricky because half the entries are incorrect ("60s wiggle dress!" on a 40s pattern...), but the pattern-only sites are good.

Yes, but I can stop whenever I feel like it - I swear!:p . Nice hats by the way. Have you made hats before, are they difficult? I'm thinking of trying my hand at it. I would have to buy a pattern though...;)

Well, I have to sell SOMETHING; I like to eat, as does my boy! ;) It was hard giving up the majority of them, but there is no way in the world I could make them all in my lifetime anyway! lol

Mis Sis,

I LOVE the jacket on that pattern, it is so cute with the cut of the dress.
I found a seller on eBay that has TONS of 30s patterns (many in larger sizes) for buy it now or best offer price.

These I got for at least 1/3 LESS than her asking price!

Which seller on eBay was selling those delicious patterns? I'd love to have a look. Please let me know.
Sarah

I love the coat and dress patterns you bought. Absolutely fabulous.

I lurve those military/Scottish styled ones. Drool...
I know. I've been wanting a Scottish hat for ages.
MarieAnne- I think hat making is easier than dress making.Sewn and blocked hats that is. I made a sailor frame from buckram and wire and I am having a devil of a time covering it. Working with felt is easier than other fabrics.
SassyLindaB- I am always looking for cheap hats to alter. Urban Outfiters has those 70's felt ones with the giant brims every year. I haven;t found them on sale for less than 9.99 though.

Holy Cow, RedHotRidingHood! What a find! I wish I could find estate sales like that around here. I need to get out and hit my local vintage and antique shops as a starting ground. But wowwie!

I picked up these two patterns from Etsy, they were $5 each :D

I love that button-up back on the last one. I wonder if that makes it a sundress, though? Day dresses don't usually have buttoned backs, do they?

Maggiethespy, I love that camisole pattern of yours! I've wanted to make a camisole or corset cover for a while.

I stumbled upon this one on Ruby Lane doing a random 'NRA" search. Its got multiple sizes in it AND a long sleeve option! Squeeeee!!!!!! IT also had a make an offer option attached to it. After much discussion from the seller (who was super polite) I got over $18 chopped off the final price! Yay!
