Just looking at the article again, one thing that I noticed was the layout of the living room, I always thought the fire was the centre of the room (rather like the TV is today), but not in this picture

Thanks for posting that link, Warden. The photos of the kitchen in particular illustrate how domestic life has (and hasn't) changed over the decades.

I realize this thread is about homes, but the photo below in just stunning. It's no wonder its maker (and the occupant of that home) was famous.

Thank you, Sir. It's still a work in progress though. While I have the bronze statuette and oil-rubbed bronze lamp, I'm still looking for a bronze statue table lamp. Not pictured is the small art deco 17th century-style Italian table, which I'm re-finishing, which is what I want the table lamp for. The ceiling fitting in my lounge is also 1930's period, and I have a desk which I didn't picture since I'm still working on that as well. But it's coming together, if a little "busy" right now

I just posted all of this to the Man Cave thread, but I thought I'd post it here as well. Some of these things I've shown before, but my place got itself in almost showable condition Sunday evening, so I thought I'd snap off a few pics to show it off.

The book case I designed myself, with a little help from Gothic Cabinetry

The art work on the wall includes a Belgian tapestry from the 1939 NY World's Fair, an ink drawing of my late wife by her teacher, Knox Martin, an ink and watercolor drawing that I picked up for $15 at a thrift shop in Brooklyn Heights, and a map of my neighborhood in the Bronx from about 1875.

The dining room, with my 30's vintage English sideboard and the gorgeous mirror from the 40's with Diana the Huntress.
She's hawwttt. In the distance out the window you can see the whole Manhattan skyline, including the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building and 30 Rock. Great view.

And my kitchen, with the 30's feed sack cloth used for curtains.

I left the Christmas lights up cause I just like the way they look. They're hooked to a dimmer, and they really look cool dimmed down to almost nothing.

dhermann1.. I love your place I remember seeing the pics when you were first moving in,and thinking i loved it then.you have really transformed it into a warm, cozy home.

I finally found the right paint for my lounge, where I have lovely wooden display cabinets and a secretaire, a big old trunk for a coffee table and colonial style prints (british / indian colonial..). I got a superb, ultra matte teal'ish color but since I am painting with a brush it takes ages and ages to do it!

Anyhow, as soon as I am done and everything is redecorated I will post pics!

I have a 1930’s cooker, a 50’s kitchenette cabinet, 50’s sideboard and matching table, enough 30’s/40’s crockery to serve a family of eight and plenty of 30’s-50’s ornaments to fill my own home, oh and father capable of doing any DIY, but alas, I’m still residing with my Ma and Pa! I’m so envious of all those who get to furnish a home with vintage! - They all look so lovely.

Not my home but I thought I'd share a picture of a house that went up for sale in my town recently. It's Victorian, built in 1889 and still has the wood siding. Would love to see what it looks like inside as the outside is still being kept up well. Of course the neighborhood it's in is a little seedy. Selling price: $69,900. A 30 year loan with nothing down at 4% with taxes and insurance puts it at around $500 a month.

I've been on this thread for hours. We're house hunting in the Charlotte, NC area (where people destroy anything of historical reference and value) and haven't found anything yet. Seeing all of your lovely homes gives me energy to keep at it. Love them all. So gorgeous.

You speak the truth....It has gotten better over the years with preservation NC getting involved to save some of the historic sites. I remember back in the 1980's when Charlotte was tearing down all kinds of historic buildings...just heart wrenching to think about it.

Have you tried finding it on a realtor's website? They usually post pictures (unless this is a For Sale By Owner...).

In 1985, I moved into a house that had that same exact oven. It was great! The large space in between the burners was great. We used the double oven all the time. Unfortunately, the power output wasn't all that great. When I went to look for another oven like that, Sears was the only one that produced something similar.
We never did buy a new one. We were still using it until the day we moved in 2000.
