It lives!

1950s wool Hollywood-waisted trousers. They fit me perfectly and have a great fabric pattern.

Another pair with a Hollywood Waist, this time made out of seersucker. This is some of the thinnest material I've ever seen, almost see-through. Too large in the waist for me so I'll probably end up selling them.

1930s mint green trousers. They fit me very well but unfortunately have quite a few large moth holes and are unwearable. I got them just as a reference piece. Love the color.

You know, with that last pair and all the holes, it could serve to be deconstructed and have a pattern made from them. Sort of reverse engineer them. The first two are fantastic looking.

There are still plenty of vintage trousers and patterns out there. I'll keep them in one piece.

[Two Types]

Here are a favourite pair of mine. Back in the early 1990s I had three pairs of trousers made by a tailor. For each pair, she used basic, wide-legged, 1930s original patterns (she used to collect old patterns and fabrics from clothing factories) (one style with button down belt looks, one with a very wide belt loop and extra wide waistband, one with a narrow waistband). I later had them copied by a trouser makers named Spencers (in Yorkshire, England). Now, whenever I need a pair, I can simply phone them up, specify which pattern to use and which fabric. And they usually get them to me within a week. And they charge around £100. They are one of the few places that use very heavy cotton for trousers. They also have a good range of moleskin, cord and wool.
I think they do a damn good service. After all, where else am I going to buy a pair of 22 inch cuff white cotton trousers?

I love this pair. It's their first outing this winter. Really basic, comfortable trousers for work. I like the front buckles. It's a detail I have on my shorts normally, but just decided it would be a change to have buckles on my trousers.

these are cotton 30-40s U.S. work trousers. nothing fancy, just a cheap trouser, but great fabric:

I recently bought these for $4 (discounted from $180). Surprisingly they're high waisted, with nice vintage style pleats and cuffs. Comparable to a few pairs of repro trousers I have. Good quality and locally made. The only problem is the colour, they're a yellow mustard (goldenrod?), which I'm not sure I'm brave enough to wear in public. I'm not even sure if these will go with anything I wear, the colour is giving me a 70's vibe. [huh]

Not bad for four bucks though, I'll just wear them 'round the house if nothing else.

If they are cotton or wool, I'd try to dye them brown. A reddish brown dye combined with the yellow will make a good brown tone.
I don't know what dye brand is commonly available in NZ, but two large packs of dark brown and one red dye should do the trick.
