I was up in Chattanooga earlier this week and found this Regal in a second hand shop.

I've recently become interested in vintage ties. I found two of silk made in Italy that I had cleaned and wore this week and they looked sharp. I started working backwards from this posting and made it to 600 before I was saturated and out of energy. I get the hand painted ties - easy - and the Indian-made, but many look like ties I've cycled through in my lifetime. I assume post-1960 doesn't qualify as vintage yet???

Is there a rule-of-thumb or something that calls out 'vintage' when I'm pawing through a rack of 100+ ties at Goodwill or a resale store? Beyond appeal, how can you spot vintage? I assume all vintage is not equal - is there a value factor that differentiates between old department store and collectable? Maybe that's what I'm asking... what constitutes a 'collectable' vintage tie?

I may make through 50 more pages tonight before I get attracted to another forum.

There are many ways to date ties. I don't know what era particularly piques your interest, so i can't say specific qualities here. However, hand-painted art deco ties from the 40s and late 50s are very sought after. For good reason, they're beautiful. Mute patterns don't attract much attention these days.

Here's an article that briefly describes ties from the 20s to the 70s. Here you'll observe the qualities that differentiate some eras.

I'm going to enjoy reviewing the article - lots of pictures! Thank you for taking the time to share it.

I too have been amassing a collection of vintage ties of late. An eBay listing last week caught my eye, bid $5 and got three hand painted narrow ties for $1.29! Came in today (from a town 20 minutes up the road...) and I couldn't be happier. Now I have to learn to tie these short ones so they are not such belly warmers. Any ideas on dating?

I'd like to get hooked on vintage ties - you guys have persuaded me. And they don't take much space. This is my first foray... It's untipped, very light, I like the colors, and I've worn it once with a charcoal suit. Not a single compliment or comment. Did I crash and burn and just didn't notice it?
