This here is my first pin curl set.

I'm fairly pleased with how it came out.

I'm so crappy at doing my hair, especially curls. I usually just do it in an updo like this to try and get out of having to style it:

and wear a hat whenever possible!

I'm thinking of dying it darker, a sort of Liz Taylor colour.

So I used the hotsticks and the tiny sticks curled really well, so I decided to try some rolls and here is what I created today:

WOW, RED! What a great hairstyle. I love the bangs especially, they look very flattering on you. I've been trying to grow my hair out to do something similar and it is taking so long that I'm starting to loose faith! I'm jealous.

I'm really trying to learn how to make every individual curl more defined and less frizzy when pinning them up in this manner after they are dry and set. When I get a better result, I'll post another picture!

Zaika, your first set turned out very nicely, obviously you're a natural, my first set was awful with all the ends straight. For your face, I think a do with more height and volume on top would be amazing.

Thanks! I've always been hesitant to try anything with height...it makes me feel weird. What do you think...pomp? Rolls?

I'm pretty sensitive to permanent dyes too, except for a few select brands that don't last very long. Have you ever tried henna? I got great results with black henna mixed with a little bit of indigo dye...you just have to make sure you buy the henna without any additives.

I'm a bit hesitant about henna since I've heard things about it being very strong and can be bad for you and stuff, but I have no idea if it's true. I'm so extremely allergic to dark hair dye (My head and face swells up like crazy and I have to get medication and stuff) that I'm scared to try something new. I should test henna on a small patch of skin sometime just to try though.

I'm a bit hesitant about henna since I've heard things about it being very strong and can be bad for you and stuff...

Henna, the real stuff, 100% with no additives, is wonderful for your hair. The problem comes with companies selling black henna, clear henna, or brown henna-- there are no such things. PPD had been added to what little henna is in it to color the hair dark. Stay far far away from this stuff! http://www.hennaforhair.com/ is an excellent site for learning about henna and what you can add to it (cloves, rubiroo, chamomile, etc) to push the color one way or another.

Some ladies use henna then indigo to get a black color instead of red, but indigo is not henna.

For the past near 2 years I've been using 100% body art quality henna bought at a local Indian grocery store to color my hair:

Laura: What a cute do! The curls on top look pretty darn good to me! You remind me of Isabella Rossellini. As for my rolls being symetrical.. it's really just practice..and sometimes luck. Because sometimes they just don't want to work out right. But I really try to make my parts (sectioning of hair) for the rolls even. Sometimes it takes a couple tries. And if the open part of the rolls doesn't look perfect.. that's what a flower or hair adornment is for! hee hee!

BeBopBaby: Thank you! I never had bangs when I styled my hair before (10 years ago) so having to do it with bangs now is a challenge. But as they grow out, I can set the curl for it better and I'm finding it easier now. I've just grown my hair out and it's worth the wait!!! Now I'm trying to decide when to layer my hair.. now, or when it gets a few inches longer?????

Ada: that style really does look wonderful on you! I know I couldn't pull that look off! And I'm always go for a color change.. hee hee.. that's just me though.

I was wondering if you can help me out.. I've been trying to do my hair similar to Dita, like fingerwaves but all my hair. My hair is quite thick and long

This weekend I tried to set my hair with medium sized rollers but I ended up with too much curls and was afraid to comb them because I was sure that I will end up with a HUGE head of hair...

Oh I also was wondering how can I obtain access to put some pics up, I used to study hairdressing and I've got plenty of good stuff for you ladies

Thanks! I've always been hesitant to try anything with height...it makes me feel weird. What do you think...pomp? Rolls?

Both! I find the pomp easier to make, you just pincurl it and brush it and that's it! I guess it also depends on the length of your hair, if you have short layers, the rolls become really difficult to make. I have a relatively short fringe and my layers are still a tad too short, so I mostly make pomps these days. According to Daniela Turudich, in order to make the perfect pomp you need a 4 inch fringe. I think both would look really good on you.

SerenityAshes, you should try to curl your hair with some small rollers and then just brush it vigorously with a soft bristle brush (don't comb it) until you get the kind of smooth wave Dita sports. You have to brush for a while! At first it will look frizzy, but it should settle. Your hair will become quite voluminous this way, yes. If you have very straight hair, maybe you should apply some hairspray to the curls before brushing them.

My pin curls

This was my first attempt at setting my own pin curls. I set them overnight (with a scarf wrapped around my head) and pulled them apart with my fingers the following morning. I think they came out pretty well, though they started to fall later in the day (didn't use setting lotion for fear of it coming out terribly and having to rewash my long hair). I believe I will use setting lotion or gel next time!
