Your corset is beautiful! I actually started sewing so I could make corsets. They are so fun to put together.
And the maid of honour gown is gorgeous. Is that heirloom sewing? I'm trying to learn to do heirloom sewing so I can make a Christening gown for my daughter; I'm just waiting on the instructions book to arrive.

Here is the pattern I would like to use. Isn't it to die for!

Here is a shirt I just finished.

This is the pattern. It's the very top shirt.

It fits! I did a fitting on myself, with pins and adjusted the seams accordingly like LizzieMaine suggested. My husband is sleeping so I have no one to take a pic of me wearing it and the hanger doesn't do it justice! Isn't the print darling? I'm very picky with prints but I really like this one. I also used tailor tacks for the first time and loved it. I never bothered with markings. I was never sure how to transfer them and thought they were too much of a hassle. Man are they handy, and tailor tacks are easy!

Marie-Anne: that is very pretty, and you did a good job! I recognize that fabric because I made a shirt dress out of it myself! It was a dream to work with.

Belt??

So here is my finished dress, all hemmed and loverly. I tried to make a skinny belt that came with the pattern, but it just ain't flattering to my figure.

I am thinking instead of making a belt, that this one I already have looks kind of fierce....Does anyone agree with me? I like it, but I would like to know if I am way off base. I think it would be pretty kicky with a pair of brown pumps and bright red lips. I am getting my hair dyed brunette tomorrow too, and will be wearing this dress to a wedding on Saturday. Thoughts?

I dont care for the belt.

It takes away from the beautiful detail you worked so hard on. Its a 40s dress, your belt should be functional and understated.

Youve put a 60s ish belt on a 40s dress. If thats what yu want, then leave it, but I think a belt made of the fabric of the dress would be a better compliment.

I totally -get- the skinny belt non flattering thing...I have the same issue.

Unless your friends are having a historically accurate wedding full of picky vintage-purist guests.....I say, wear what makes you -feel- fantastic.

No one is gonna keep score and/or even notice your belt is 'wrong'...if they did, then I feel dreadfully sorry for the bride, who they should be looking at.

For me, it totally depends on the dress. Some dresses need skinny belt, some need a wide one.

I think it looks great.

I'd suggest having a wide belt made with a big vintage buckle. I'd go slightly smaller than the one you have in the picture. Some 40s belts were wide and it would fit with the style of the dress.

I think the one you have with it there steals the dress's thunder and you don't want that after all your hard work on it!

I like the belt, but it does seem to cause bunching. Does it cause bunching when it's on you?

Thanks for the input gang! I am on the lookout today for either a buckle or a more understated belt....If need be, I will definitely make a wide belt as opposed to a wee one....my waist is just a tad too thick these days to wear tiny belts. And as much as I like "sticking to period" I am all about mixing and matching to get the desired results.

Yes, all heirloom sewing. Hopefully I'll have more detailed shots of it from the professional photographer. Lots of tucks, lace insertion, edging, french seams - it was a handful.

I'm so glad to hear someone else does heirloom sewing. I'm just trying to get started, and after asking a hundred librarians, thousands of search engines, and a handful of seamstresses and fabric store clerks I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one in the world. I had to re-order the book and the pattern because something went wrong with my order. Hopefully it won't be long, and I can get started. I'm so excited!

I went to my favorite fabric store this past week, and they had some great prima cotton on sale for $4 a yard! So I made some much needed white blouses.

Now that the weather is going to get cooler soon, I decided to make one long sleeved. I like playing wiht cuff treatments

I also got some great maroon wool crape, and some charcoal wool gabardine for a pair of slacks. Ill post picks of what I made of those soon.
