One of the most, if not THE most Famous Mexican Actor from all time, Pedro Infante:

Here, wearing a Dinner Jacket:

Wearing a crew neck and Maybe a sportscoat or a suit:

And this is not really a suit, but the Police uniform he wore in "A Toda Maquina", which was very likely tailored for him:

A different Dinner Jacket:

A very curious detail is that in every single photo or movie I've seen with him he always wore suits with really big shoulderpads, as you can see in the two dinner jacket examples. Back then, Americans were wearing the famous "bold look" and it's possible that he embraced this fashion. My Grandfather told me once that this was not the norm with every other gentleman, and that his looks were sometimes considered Garish and vulgar by the most conservative members of the mexican society (Who were the majority back then, as far as I understand). I really would like to find out who was his tailor, but saddly that info seems to be really hard, if not impossible to come by...

Freddy's suit in 'A Room With A View'.

the film is set around 1905 but the suit looks later; belt back with vent, neat-ish fitting, small notch...looks more early to mid 20s.
i really like this suit but have no idea if it is an original vintage one or made for the film.

In the movies, of course he wore the costume wardrobe but outside he seemed very casual and not very "Hollywood".
In " A toda Maquina" he wears normal late 40s suits and you see his costar wear a belted Cream hollywood.

Mexican cinema has some of the most elegant suits displayed in the films, But Pedro was very casual still

DamianM I never noticed your Avatar Picture before... Acaso eres Mexicano, de casualidad? You are right about his style, and actually one of his most famous looks was the tight fitting striped Tee. What I wonder is exactly why did the film costumiers decided to use those wide shoulder pads... He was a very athletic guy, so he wouldn't have needed them. Still, I love his films and the way he sung, but I find myself liking the suits he wore quite a lot, and I always wondered if my grand uncle's suit was influenced by this style...

I am of Mexican roots. I live in LA after all. HA
Not to pipe my own horn but my grandfather looks alot-like Pedro especially when he was so much younger. And according to family legend, my father told me that my grandfather once had his 50s Cadillac. this was in the late 60s.

I do have a 50s striped T that I wore to hell (holes all over now) all because he would wear it a lot on screen and off.

That is great! I am from Mexico City, where I've lived my entire life. Any idea as to what happened to the cadillac? Could you post pics of that 50s tee? I've always wondered how did those look in the flesh...

Nope no idea. They just said they traded it in for another car, same way he got the caddy. Man if only.

You can find the Ts here and there. Mine just has green small stripes, then there are those with the bigger bolder striped that Tin tan wore most.

Early 1930s, rather than 1940s.

Thanks for the correction :) (not super familiar with these old movies) However, your info confirms what I was saying about it being a late occurrence of what was once very common.

Neville chamberlain:

And while we're at it, probably one of the dapperest chaps who ever lived, Sir Joseph Austen Chamberlain, who was I believe a relative of Neville:

Although in the above photo he sports a club collar, he was (near as I can tell from google image) almost never seen without his wing collar and four in hand tie:

It was said of Sir Joseph Austin: "He always wore his monocle like a gentleman!"

This is a little odd: From a movie called Drole De Drame (1937)

Have not watched the whole movie(it is on youtube), but it is set in 1900s London.
The outfit looks distinctly 1930s, though the jacket has four buttons.
I highly doubt it is period correct.
Is there a possibility that this jacket was custom made to look 1900s, but with the tailoring of the day dictating that nothing less than huge shoulders would do? ;)
