Besides his hats I like the turquoise jacket...and his ladies. He lives the good life!

Good life is right! I'd like to know what that turquoise jacket weighs.

I love the 100+ year old photos. Looking at those you have no doubt why it became common to say "SMILE!" before taking a photo. Most of those old photos could have been taken in the lobby or parking lot of a pain management clinic. Most looked like they were in pain or a huge family fight was paused in order to take the picture. LOL

On the 19th century and early 20th century photos it is more the time it took to capture an image...a smile is a hard thing to hold for more than 4 or 5 seconds.......some of the earliest photos took 10 seconds or more, depending on the light source..... On some of those it is even hard to keep still.....they had rests for your neck and head to keep you steady!

Ran across this in a 1947 LIFE magazine. Supreme Court Justice William O.Douglas being served a soda by his daughter. Looks to be a wide, square crease at the back of his hat.

Ironically it was Jim's suicide in 1902 due to the harsh conditions of their parole in Minnesota that paved the way for Cole to be released from what was to be parole for life, & allowed to return to Missouri.

These postcards certainly make a statement about the fashion trends of the time! The first one is dated 1908, and makes fun of the ladies big hats. The second one would date from right about the same time, and shows perhaps a practical use of those big hats! Note the nice fedora on the knee.......

I see some felt hats, but most of the people in that photo do appear to be wearing straw boaters.

A nice example for the tradition ... caps for young men and hats for adults.
Or does it just appear that way, because caps make them look younger?
