At what point is a hat officially considered a stingy brim? My stingiest brim is 2" and anything less makes my head look too large. I would prefer at least a 2 1/2" brim but not more than a 3".

2" is the 'official' definition for a stingy, but it varies based on head. A 2" brim does not look 'stingy' on my narrow face and short stature.

I have different brim widths but I prefer wide, as in 2 1/2 or better.

Nah, just kidding. Heres that hat now:

Here's my shortest brim, 2 inches:

And heres my beloved Fed IV, where I got the brim dimensions for the conversion in the first pic:

There are a couple of others, but for illustrative purposes, these'll do.

Short Brim, Monaco by Brooks Bros.

I prefer wide brim, ( 2 3/4 to 3 and half inches) because my size is 60 (7 1 / 2) and thence, in big head, the hat with short brim seems bonnet or college cap, maybe in small size, the wide brim looks well. The shoes are selling in all sizes with the heels same, little and largest have same, when you look the big shoes, this look rare with absurdity proportion, is equal reference when you see hats in different sizes with short brim. The size brim must be longest than the hat size, as well as, little hats with short brim and big hats with wide brim, proportion is the word..:):):)

In the abstract, I much prefer a wider brim - 2 3/4" or so is ideal. That said, I have a few hats in a more 50s style that have a 2" brim, and I like them a lot too. I find I often prefer that slightly narrower brim with a more casual jacket, such as a Harrington, or an A2. I really don't care for a narrower brim than 2", though there are folks out there as can work 'em. I have only one smaller brim, a brown Dobbs that I bought as the beginnings of a Rorschach (Watchmen) costume.

This vintage Akubra Warwick is stingy for me. It's a bit fuller in the brim and crown than the tiny lids the young fashionistas are sporting lately. Does that put me in the wide camp or the 50/50?

sun protection

If you want sun protection the brim should be at least 2.5" wide. So thats the smallest brim I wear.

My hats all seem to fall in the 2 3/8 to 2 5/8 range, with the Akubra Feds just outside on one end and my most recent purchase, a dark brown Resistol Kitten Finish, at 2 1/8 on the other end. I wore the RKF yesterday, and it looked pretty good on me at some angles. I'm just not sure I can carry off the super-narrow or super-wide brims.

I'd think hats with short brim are more suitable for younger fellas. I prefer hats with wide brim, because: first of all it has to protect me from sun or rain and second: I've got an extraordinarily big head - I look ridiculous with hats that have a short brim...

It depends on what clothes I wear and where I go. Forest trails or bulky coat - wide brim is OK, city - narrower brim, but 2 1/8 is about as narrow as I would go for.

Hats I own have brim widths from 2 3/8" - 3 1/8". I wear them all depending on use, weather, attire, etc.

My favorite hats have brims widths in the 2 1/2" - 2 3/4" range.

2 1/2" to 2 3/4" for me, although my indoctrination to wearing a fedora in public began with a vintage gray Knox with a 2" welted edge brim--it seems tiny on my head now.

No stingies, no way, no how. The shortest brim hat I own is a 2-1/4 and that is too short for me. I have one at 2-3/8, as well, tho that one looks a bit better. But after that all my hats go from 2-1/2 to 2-7/8 (not including westerns). I prefer between 2-5/8 and 2-3/4 but 2-1/2 is OK.

I have a fairly big head,so I think anything less than 2 1/4" looks a bit funny, however I do own a 1 5/8" felt stingy, which is very warm and comfortable and I wear it when working in close quarters. My wife hates it , but it is also the hat that I have recieved the most compliments on from other women.(Maybe they are just saying that to be nice, while they giggle and point behind my back, and are secretly glad Im not their husband?)
