Another Second Life thread?

As I recall there was another,.. I admit I am in it myself. The sheer creativity of it is addictive. :) Anything one can conceive can be created in this virtual world. I am a builder/inventor of sorts in Second Life, just as I am in real life. So maybe I fit in seamlessly then, without any trepidations. Building and creating there does take some getting used to, but if one is at least somewhat adept at any of the popular computer graphics programs out there, then one can learn to create all sorts of useful, and/or beautiful things in Second Life, and even make real money doing it.
I once built an entire SIM, complete with waterfalls, a lake, a forest, beaches, rental houses and a huge castle. I have met a lot of people from all over the world that I consider friends, and honed my computer graphics and problem solving skills. There is no better venue I think, in which to interact with people one would otherwise never get to know.
Also I have never lost sight of the fact that I am indeed a real person, and that everyone else there is truly a real person behind their keyboards. I have met quite a few genuine people online, (and subsequently in the real world) that I will be friends with for the rest of my life.
In short, "life is what you make it", and so the same goes for Second Life as well.

I'm a record breaker :)
Do I get a reward?

I tried it as well and didn't like it, till I searched for 1920s, 1930s, 1940s and found some virtual gems that I loved.
99% of Second Life is horrible and to be avoided by old fashioned people like me, but that 1% of that virtual world is a great experience.
In the end a virtual world is what you make of it, if you want to live in a 20 foot high 1926 Fedora hat, you can in Sl :D
Then you must know the region called Caledon? A huge expanse of steampunk SIMs.:)

Yes I know it and like parts of it but I am not really that much into Steampunk
To me SL is all about time travel, one of the few things I want to do but can't do in real life.
I've been to many Victorian sims in SL but to me they were all too romantic, not realistic or authentic enough.
I wanted to visit the real past, not the past where everyone wore pretty clothes, the streets were clean and houses huge.
Thats why I created 1920s Berlin, there we have narrow streets, small houses and tenants even share a toilet ;)
And yes you can make money in SL, I have not spend much of my real money there and if you don't want to you don't have to spend a real penny but could make a fortune.
In my sim there are many people who work there behind the bar, shine shoes, run the hotel, and some of them make enough money to rent a house, buy nice stuff etc.
Some people even make a pretty good real living out of what they do in SL.
To me its the first game that hasn't cost me money to play but made me some.
But thats of course not why i spend almost every evening there ;)
To me the pleasure of sharing some Al Bowlly records from my private collecting with friends is why I'm there.
And because silk stockings are easier to find there ;)

Herr Danger, come and check out Berlin some time, we have a free common 1930s suit with flatcap for all visitors ;)

I thought it might be fun to look around in Second Life, but while creating an account it seems that one can choose one's first name, but the last name has to be chosen from a provided list. Must I really be Slim Bloobury, or is there a way to choose a last name of my own liking?

It takes a little getting used to, like most silly modern computer thingies ;)
But its worth the effort to try again!
If you (or anyone else) would like a hand figuring Second Life out or a tour of 1920s Berlin, give me a call.

Thanks! 1920's Berlin sounds lovely! If I ever want a non-foliage experience of SL, I will let you know ;)

Meanwhile in Second Life, Jo plays another record on her 1928 Decca.

Got on SL a few years ago, mostly to help out occasionally as a guide at a friend's virtual Masonic museum. Across the road was a goth/ vampire castle, run by a vampire female who I suspect is really a guy, and down the street was a B&D museum. Strange place, overall. Unsure of how good an idea it is.

Zabud McCaw, BTW.

My husband and I made a character called Juel Forsythe, but we never play. Too complicated! I can't make my girl look "vintage" and she gets hit on by weirdos all the time lol

Never liked Second Life, but due to some unsavoury events I will never patronise them.

Back in 2006 or so, I was a moderator on a forum for a game being developed by an independent developer (www.alliancethegame.com). One of the selling points of the game was their patented lighting engine. It was so fantastic that the company that owns Second Life bought out Wind Ward Mark (makers of Alliance), and had them revamp Second Life with their own engine.

Now, that's fine and dandy. In the course of the buy out, however, they left the rights of Alliance to WWM, but forced them to shelve it indefinitely, and to this day there is no news regarding the game's development.

So, in the immortal words of Edmund Blackadder, my response to Second Life is "sod off."
