I go purely by heat. In practical terms, usually May through early September are too hot in London for furfelt (or, indeed, for comfort generally). That's when I reach for Straw more often than not, though also cotton and/or linen caps / berets/ w.h.y. I do have an Akubra with vented crown which is the only furfelt I can wear in great heat. I also have two vintage black bowlers that are Summer weight and have a subtly vented crown, but not worn those out yet.

Edward, you always have style, have you ever tried a more modern day trilby? I have a couple for summer wear, they contrast well with a summer blazer.

Never owned one of those - I tend to prefer a wider brim, especially for keeping the Sun off. I've toyed with the idea of one of the wider-brimmed type in hemp, though, if I found the right one. Myh most worn brimmed hats in the Summer though tend to be Akubra Capricorns - the polystraw takes abit of a beating and holds up well to rain.

Poly straw is not something that I have heard of. No matter how many ways I searched, as in: Poly Straw hats for men, and as many variations on that as I could think of, I kept getting the usual myriad of straw hats. Not to be beaten, I contacted the milliner that made my wife a hat for the wedding that we are going to at the end of the month. She told me that it's very popular in ladies millinery but couldn't tell me of a supplier of poly straw gents hats.

Mine came by post - if memory serves, I got two white ones from Everything Australian and a brown and a grey from HatsDirect.com - top middle: https://hatsdirect.com/collections/straws Inevitably not as cheap as once they were with the weak pound, but given that my grey one is now over a decade old with heavy wear - the pleather sweatband has flaked a little, but it's still perfectly functional and the hat won't need replaced for some years yet - still worth it. Also a bit tempted by the other model in black, reminds me of Connery's hat when he plays golf with Goldfinger...

Thanks Edward, I shall check that out. Giving the Stetson a second outing today, storm Dennis has receded somewhat, still wintry though, and the rain, wretched rain, it's as though there's no end to it.
The Stetson Sovereign, although a really lovely hat, is the only grey one that I have, I would like to get a couple more in varying degrees of the grey spectrum. Tina made my waistcoat, (vest) trousers and tie, I want to get a darker grey fedora, or maybe lighter, like silver grey. Suggestions?
